I don't own a JW avon but they look fine and a real bargain, all the guys i know who do own them sing their praise's so if i already owned one i'd make up apair, that way you know it's caractaristics and you don't have to think about different tackle.
I have to say though that i prefer one rod for chubbing, travel light for roving or build the swim up untill they are crawling up your rod if static, that may mean not baiting a hook for a couple of hours or more.

I really like my JW avon rod, and I think I have improved it by having a fuji reel seat fiited, cost me ?20 and I think it's money well spent!

i think if you shop around u can pick the new Diawa Powermesh barbel specialist Avon up for ?125 ish.....
well impressed with mine, and I believe other list members are.
Maybe a bit heavy for general coarse chub etc.....probably geared up to 4-6lb line at 1.25lb test curve.
Otherwise, John Wilsons at ?75 are the dogs boll*8*......

Have you seen my review of the Shimano Technium Specialist? I think it's a great 'all rounder'. It will handle a wide spectrum of situations and what I really like about it is it comes with 5 different push in tips from 1oz to 3oz. I paid ?130 for mine, but I'm sure you can do better than that these days. I would recommend it to anyone. I also have a John Wilson, but it rarely sees the light of day now I have the Technium, despite it being a good rod.

Has anyone ever had to send anything back to masterline? I have a J W heavy feeder that I borrowed off the other half's dad, unfortunatley the third cast with a hemp packed 2oz feeder and the rod had a right angle in it! Oh dear! To make things worse the rod had never even been used before and still has the cellophane on the handle. Any ideas for a desperate man would be welcome. I hope he doesn't read this!
