I wouldn't really use a whip for carp Daniel, unless it's really strong and the top section has been elasticated, There's a lot of margin poles around just now and they will do the job better than a whip. In summer I use the power section of my pole with a 14-18 elastic through 3 sections and fish pellets & paste, maggots, worm or corn. When the fish are feeding in the marging and competing they will eat just about anything you care to throw at them, getting them there and feeding in the first place can be the difficult part.

Daniel, i am sure that you are too young to be finding out about whips and hard bottoms, stick to fishing.
Seriously though a specialist type waggler or twin tip rod, fished lift method would probably be more suitable for margin fishing. Unless you go for a specialised 'hit and hold' margin pole you will I am sure have difficulty coping with the speed and strength of a carp hooked under the tip.

There are probably more of the younger generation that know alot about the mor 'technical' side of fishing than you realise Dave, They always crack computers and ps2 games quicker than the older generation and though. I believe a technical and informative answer would be more informative to the young chap than you think, but unfortunately not from me because I know buggerall about whips.

Daniel, as its your birthday in April why not ask your folks for a 5-6 metre margin pole like Rodney suggested. You can pick them up for ?50-ish, all fully elasticated. You're better trying to get one of these as a whip probably won't be strong enough and you'd have to cut it back too much back to fit elastic anyway.

Check the adverts in the weeklies.
