Read this and you realise that it isn't just the likes of loony PETA who are threatening angling.

Get your letters sent to this local council, and any other council that acts just as irresponsibly, before they get the idea we anglers will allow them to treat us with such disrespect.

Graham/Paul,
Do you think an Email address for the council or council leader would result in more messages of disgust getting through?

As email is now totally regarded 'legal tender' can we not enter an online petition. Perhaps enter every email address of Fishing Magics members and post a message in the weekly mail-out saying 'if you do not wish to be entered onto the petition, then send Graham an email stating so'. That way it will remain above board and controlled in a way the council may understand. All this as well as individual letters and petitions, may help? Could that work Graham?

I am an angler (member South Reading & RDAA) and am also a member of the RSPB. So I am particularly concerned to know WHICH of these organisations were in favour of this pernicious ban. If anyone out there knows I think we should be told. Know your enemy. If the RSPB happens to be one of them my word processor will be getting a bit hot.

Before we go 'steaming in' perhaps we should find out a little more from Watford Piscatorials. There may be history that comes with this decision.

Watford Piscators have a website at www.sherpa.demon.co.uk/wphome.htm. Oddly whilst it's 'news' section is up-to-date they do not mention this particular situation. They do however list the names of the carp in their favourite lake, excuse me whilst I stop to puke.

Stuart (Dennis), that could be a good idea, but I'm more inclined to think a bombardment of individual emails will be more difficult to ignore than one single document (petition or bulk email) that could possibly be discarded in one hit.

And I think it is best to keep the emails short and sharp rather than long and boring. That way they'll be more inclined to read them.

This is one (not the only one!) I've just sent, which can be used as a basis for anyone else's email should they want to use it.

'Re The fishing on the river Glade in Cassiobury Park.

I think it is a very poor idea to take away the perfectly legitimate leisure activity of fishing from local young people and other anglers (rod licence payers at that). The park is surely for all people in the area and should not be at the mercy of local pressure groups who don't like anglers. You are being overly influenced by anti-angling groups and have no legitimate reason for banning angling. The park and its amenities are for everyone, not the chosen few.'

I used to fish this free stretch when I was a kid just as my grandad had as lad nearly 100 years ago.

I hadn't heard anything about it till I saw the thread on FM even though I still live only 20 miles away.

The bank that is mainly fished has paddling pools, football pitches and a path next to it.

I can't see that banning angling will make any difference to the wildlife in the park at all.

The council has always been very trendy lefty and as you drive into watford you are greeted by signs proclaiming that you are entering a nuclear free zone.

Someone ought to remind them that they were elected to represent the people of Watford not to act to their own agendas.

Perhaps Fishingmagic should have a fish-in at the park to draw attention to the decision )

Here's the email address of the letter's page of Watford's local paper. Send them them a letter (email) telling them just what you think about it all.

And here's a reminder of the Watford Council website address where you can tell them what you think about their anti-angling attitude - politely of course!

<a href=http://www.watford.gov.uk/ideas/default.asp>'Watford Council Website'</a>.

Come on, this is where we can show them the power of angling and the internet when our forces are mustered!

In reply to some of your queries :

I am informed that RSPB were not involved with the move to ban angling. I am told the meeting was attended by the Council's Conservation Officer, the Herts/Middx Wildlife Trust, and the "Friends of Cassiobury Park", a local voluntary group who have attacked angling in the past.

The Watford Piscators member who acted as angling representative when the nature reserve was first set up was allegedly NOT INVITED TO THE MEETING, so don't let's get the impression that the club is in any way to blame.

This is getting massive - thanks to all you anglers out there for your interest and support - and thanks to Mike Heylin, Secretary of the Specialist Anglers' Alliance, for getting the ball rolling.

There are some scary facts in this article. Food for thought for all those who say that angling is too big to get banned. Lose enough of these small battles and in time we lose the war.
