The problem is that i always thought the backing was the thick piece of line. but i have seen many adverts in angling magazines for fly lines and they show the backing.
Have you got any idea how i got muddled or something.

the backing line is what goes on your reel first.before the actual fly line its there for when you get a big fish on and it runs a long distance away. further than the length of your fly line which is only some thirty or forty yards long.it also fills the spool of the reel up.so your line is not coiled to tightly.

Keith when i bought my fly rod and reel they came with a green piece of backing or fly line do you no how to tell the difference.

Backing is usually a white braid, fly line is plastic coated and coloured to give it the weight for casting
