Back leads

Coud someone please explain how to use back leads? eg. do you cast out, take up the slack and then clip one on or do you clip one on and then take up some slack? A basic question I know, but any feedback would be welcomed.

First option as if you take up slack after putting on a back lead you will end up moving it.Try this ... cast out , tighten up to the lead ,open bale arm , push the rod back behind you and clip on back lead near the tip of the rod..Hold mainline and let back lead slide down to where you want it to sit. At this point release the mainline .Now get the rod and reel in gently till you have taken up any slack.Be careful not to move the back lead.
