Brilliant article. ?600 for bite alarms sounds frightening. The cost of watercraft is nothing apart from time. Good luck with your p.b. project Kevin. You may be able to do some of them for less than the figures you quoted. Worms and livebaits for perch free. Loaf of bread for chub 50p. I look forward to reading your next article.

I remember from the Daiwa catalogue last year (I think ?)Their top of the range pole had an amazing rrp of ?7500. Seven and a half grand for a fishing rod without rings and nowhere to put a reel!

Nice one Kevin, although having read this weeks contribution I found myself mentally counting the cost of my tackle.

Now, over the last 15 or so years I have got myself into the habit of not doing that as I really don't need to justify my purchases at all.

I mean, jeeze, its a frightening exercise; 320 for alarms and receiver; 375 for baitrunners; 400 for rods; 120 for pod, and so it goes, ad nauseum! And that is just the Carping gear, hopefully I won't make a start on my Cane and 'pin collection, or my Tenching kit, and no way am I going to add up the cost of my matchfishing kit.

Nonetheless, another super contribution, thanks.

The cost of fishing tackle is something I have had a go at in the past. Most of the time however the letters or articles I have sent off have not been published because the editors have been scared of their advertisers reacting.

As a born Yorkshireman and a latter day South African, I have an aversion against being ripped off. You should hear me complaining about the price of a pint and an hotel bed when I go to London for example.

Let's start with rod fittings for example. During the 80s when I used to build rods semi-professionally, I used to be able to buy a Fuji DPS reel seat for less the ?1.00. I also could buy a complete set of top quality Sic rod guides for less than ?2.00!!

I used to go into the stores of Mia Sports in Jo'burg and fill a supermarket bag with Portugese specie cork for the handles for about ?2.00. On top of that I had access to Sage and Fenwick blanks for as little as ?13.00 a set!! - 1993

Take fluorocarbon lines for example. You can buy a bulk spool of Stren Fluorocarbon in the States for a very reasonable price. There are companies in UK who are charging as much as ?7.00 for a 20 metre spool of the same stuff!!!

All you do is buy a bulk spool of decent fluoro in the USA for about 15 dollars and re-spool it.

I have nothing against entreprenuers and business men making a honest buck in bringing equipment to people who want to buy it, and who are prepared to pay the price. However I think it is nothing more than dis-honest to disguise what is a decent product at a decent price under a name that happens to be the current designer label to be seen with.

Young anglers are particularly subject to such attractions.

As an old fart, all that I can tell the younger people is to beware of so called designer labels masquerading under with-it names.

Shop around, you can buy a great deal of things these days at prices well below those that are advertised. especially if you know what you are doing and what you want.

And I've neen ripped off a few times in my like I can tell you.
