Thought I heard on the radio today that some theives in attempting to nick a petrol tanker?
Appears they took off a valve when they left with the consequence that the whole lot went into the Lune?
Please tell me I was mistaken or it wasn't as bad as all that?

Dave,
Yep apparently a couple of dodgy geezers tried to help themselves to a storage tank full of diesel.Opened the tap on the tank and then couldn't close it apparently. It ran into a feeder stream on the lower/tidal reaches, hopefully the high water levels will ensure it doesn't linger too long.I'm led to believe that there was a LOT of diesel going down the brook.

I once worked as a security guard at a drinks factory.
I was ordered by the director of the factory and my boss not to let the NRA staff on site.
They wanted to check the waste water outflow into the river.
I used to let the NRA in anyway and escort them around the site.

Could the owners of the tanker be held responsible?
They should have taken measures to ensure that access to the site was restricted and that the valve could not be opened.

Similar thing happend on the River Cray in kent.
Someone gotinto the WA site and clossed off a valve. The sewage backflowed and came up through a vent and into the river killing everything, several years ago.

The owner is responsible for ensuring that an tank, tanks or storage containers are kept in a bunded area. The volume of the area being such that if all the storage tanks leaked it could contain their contents. What I’ve heard so far is that the bund was also damaged. The leakage into the river Lune was below the weirs in Lancaster therefore it would not affect the coarse fisheries. The river at the moment is in full floor so hopefully the leak will be well flushed out to sea as should the scum bags how tried to nick the fuel in the first place.

Ashe,
It will all come down to , had all 'reasonably practicable'actions been taken to prevent access and tampering. This is of course a matter of judgement but in environmental matters at the moment even the most conscientious companies are often prosecuted.

DaveO'L, that depends, if the rivers well up the bream won't be playing out and we don't have any chubb or barbel which can cope with flood conditions. In that case the 16th may be on the Ribble.

I hear that the feminine hygine products are quite productive in a flood there John? :)
Best of luck for there then as well.

That’s what we need Dave, a couple of cormorants on Ralf Harris’s Animal Hospital that have been choked by tampons on the river Ribble. That should sort out the pollution problem and if it didn’t then it may sort out the cormorants?

Lovely , nice one John! I believe cormorants are attracted to strong fishy smells- two birds /one stone!!

Hello guys

I am from Lancaster the City which the Lune runs through although now living in Peterborough the diesel leaked into the lune at Heysham although this is terrible thing to happen on a plus point the coarse fishing really stops at Halton Weir which is where the tide stops at all but the highest tides and this is a couple of mile up upstream of Heysham so the bream etc should be safe .
