Sounds like Blair and nine bellies Prescott became immortal. Even worse than artifical fish, don't you think Ron?

It's a sterile hybrid. Great idea for livebaits - can't breed if it escapes.

4. In 1896, and again during 1960's a few barbel were introduced to the Dorset Stour and the Hampshire Avon where they multiplied and thrived to produce a barbel mecca. In 1956 Angling Times introduced 509 barbel to the River Severn and we now have over one hundred miles of prime barbel fishing. A few barbel were also introduced to the River Wye, the Bristol Avon etc. and some northern rivers such as the Ribble, Dane and Weaver. They have thrived in all these rivers.

With the current trends in carp and barbel angling Mark's article could, one day, become a possibility.
Quite frightening. I hope we can de-commercialise angling to some extent before it is too late.

Barbel are endemic to many of the easterly flowing rivers of England, and have been so since the seperation of these islands from Europe. The Trent, Thames, Yorkshire Ouse and its tributaries are examples of rivers where barbel are a native species.

Barbel have evolved naturally in these waters.

Carp are a genetically modified species bred selectively over thousands of years for food. It was most likely the Romans who brought carp to Britain.

apparently ron, the carp were only bought in because the anchient monks found fishing for barbel too hard. as dynamite wasn't invented back then, there was no hemp or maize available and the luncheon meat kept going off thru lack of tins. all until "monkline" bought out some ball of bread soaked with a natural bait complex -"honey8". this is how the catholic church got there money-turning a cheap commodity into a money spinner using very clever marketing. of course, importing carp wasn't frowned upon then.....

Matt Hayes(I think) did a feature on one --
