I have tried the Zig Rig a couple of times without any success. I have decided that on my next trip I am going for it during the day and will catch a carp on the zig. What terminal tackle do people use, in particular what line/ Braid and what hook arrangment. i am going to fish it free running with a four ounce inline lead. Any help very much appreciated!

Cheers

I dont know whether it makes much difference (possible to hook choice), but I forgot to say that I intend to fish it with a 20mm pop up!

I personally use a bomb type lead on a lead clip and tail rubber type system (Korda) with a couple of feet of rig tubing to minimize tangles. Hooklength is usually mono, either Drennan Double Strength or Flourocarbon of one sort or another. Hooks are kept small, 8's or 10's, yet strong. Drennan Super Specialist is a particular favourite.

I've had great success with baits just in the surface film when the carp are cruising on the surface but make sure there's no hooklength on the surface. Try a bunch of floating maggots - killer!

Sascha,

Thanks for the tips! The water I am fishing is full of Rudd (Literally full), so I think maggots would be a no go, but a great idea never the less!

Bit of enterprise plastic corn? Put a lump of dissolving rig foam on the hook to make sure the bait rises to the surface and doesn't get stuck on any weed.

Same here until this year Dave. They seem to ignore floaters yet will take baits from just under the surface in my local pit, strange things these carp!

I have to admit to have only dabbled with zig rigs but in my experience they are very depth critical. Here is where many of the problem lie in my oppinion. It is fine if you are fishing to visable fish because you can just adjust your depth accordingly. I have witnesed fish swim above and below baits without even appearing to have noticed them, yet put the same bait right in front of their noses and bingo. I presume this is because you are trying to catch fish that are not switched into feeding mode and as such they wont go out of their way to investigate such a small food signal.

Just try the rig foam, soak it in a flavour or food dip first and the use it, if it's squarish and yellow for example your giving out the mimic of corn but with an added attractor that leaks out quickly.
Try it, it works.

Nick Helleur describes an interesting zig in this month's Advanced Carp Fishing. It consists of a sunken clear pike float semi fixed with a 3 foot hook link above it. This allows you to let the sub float hit the surface then pull it down the exact length of the hook link plus however much you want the bait beneath the surface. bingo, a fully adjustable zig!!

Just got back from the C.S. junior event
at Diawa, only had 2 fish both to the zigs
19lb nd 21.12 in three foot of water, fish also came from the top on mixers, both fish came to Bakers meaty chunks, nothing on zigged boilies.
