Ihave just seen a hooklength of less than one inch catch a fish.
Now Im happy with mine at between 6-8 inches.

I have fished with hooklengths from 1" to 18"(excluding the obvious zig).

I try to watch fish feeding and adjust the length of the rig accordingly.

Some carp feed like tench and lip the bait hence a 1" hooklength.

Others suck, blow, fan with pectorals, flick with tail etc. These are the crafty bu**ers that require watching carefully and a specific rig to achieve a certain presentation or hook turning function

Use 1 inch hoolinks at times when roaching/chubing, can make the difference.

Don't do it. I know of various experiments over the years. Please consider the fish and the potential to damage them from leads next to their eyes.

I know of some peeps who have fished a longshank nailer off the lead swivel.

I've seen the same peeps holding big fish for the camera.

To say that you wouldn't fish a short hooklength due to fish welfare concerns is as daft as it is laughable.

Get a grip boys!

Can someone explain how a 4 inch hook link
is more or less 'concerning' than a 5 inch hook link?

Do you put an order in for the size of fish that you're gonna catch?

You're talking crap, men and I'm sorry if I offend onyone but you are!

I know Dave, I couldn't believe what I was reading!

Roy Sutton has posted about 'various experiments' over the years - the mind simply boggles!!

Have no doubts about it boys, if you think that fish welfare is under scrutiny now, just wait till the anti lobby realise that they've lost it with the fox issue.

It'll be fishing next and if we're not bullish in our replies then we'll get walked all over.

So come on Wol, what's the issue with a 4" hooklink. Is that for a 10lb fish or a 30.

Cakey, how exactly does a 4oz lead smack Mr Carp in the face then. Been under water and watched it all happen?

See my point?

People pick up on this kind of thing when we should be emphasising the positives.

How many fish do anglers save each year by reporting deoxygenation problems, pollution, lock gate failure etc etc.

How many fish do we return in better condition than when we caught them?

Damage due to spawning rigours, removal of parasites etc.

Sorry Dave, I'm as passionate about my fishing as ever!
