Need Some advice here. I am relatively new to carp fishing and am lucky enough to have a brother who's quite an expert. Trouble is he is a tackle tart and i cannot always afford what he suggests. Now myslef, he and some mates are off to France for a weeks fishing and want I want to know is what would be a recommended rod set up to take with me. Currently I have a pair of 2 3/4lb TC rods with Shimano 10k's. However we can fish 3 rods so if am to take another i want the right one for the job. My concerns are regarding fishing at distance the the rumours of a possible moster - and at distance I am not sure my current set up will cope. Does anyone think in need heavier rods and if so what can they recommend?

cheers

Gary

2 3/4's will handle anything even france can chuck at them. how big is the lake your going to? if you can cast to them, you dont need bigger, if your boating them out it doesn't matter anyway!

Dave thanks for the advice. As I mentioned in my last email I will want to take a third rod to France with me. Can you make any recommendations, as there are so many of them out there. At the moment I have a couple of Nash Hooliguns but get the feeling they are entry level rods and now I am hooked maybe there are better rods to look at(?).

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Hooligans, agrred they're not the most expensive but they are extremely high quality for the price!!

BTW I dont use them (mine are cheaper)

i would suggest you look at the giant range of rods.
as for test curve i would suggest you use what you are comfortable with as any decent rod should deal with a large fish

Gary,
I am not a carp specialist but I do some carp fishing. My main carp rods are 2.75lb t/c like yours and they cope with all of my carp and pike fishing. Mine are Diawa Powermesh X and I have been very happy with them. I also have a set of Shimano Perfection 2lb t/c rods which I use for margin fishing and/or smaller waters. Again these are excellent. These have not been made for several years but similar rods are available. I cannot imagine needing anything heavier than the 2.75lb rods on the waters I fish. The 2lb rods are nice to use but I could get away with just having the 2.75lb ones if I hadn't already owned the 2lb rods when I bought the 2.75lb ones. The 2lb rods are also useful for heavy tench fishing and barbel fishing in floods.

Why do people feel the need to buy "spod" and even more so "marker" rods when they all ready have spare carp rods Cakey??

my 13ft 3lb'ers wont cast an 8oz spod...
i have 5 rods, 3 13ft 3lb's that i use for everything, a marker and a spod.
why do coarse anglers have float/feeder/poles? its so you have the right rod for the situation.

I take the point about the spod rod, never had to buy one myself as I have always had a suitable sea rod to use,but i am at a total loss when it comes to why you need a dedicated rod for your marker when there is a spare carp rod avaiable.

IF you have a spare, i dont. it also doubles up as my stalking rod.

Sorry Dave at cross purposes there I thought you were reccomending one of these dedicated rods.
