Shimano aero 10000 XTE, superb reels, will cast further than you are able. And not too big and bulky. Good line lay and baitrunner, and cheaper than Daiwa or Shimano big pits.

Cakey has said it mate. The old adage of balanced tackle is still valid. No need too put specialist long range reels on medium range rods. The subject of tackle selection is a vast one and I am sure if I gave you all my views it would bore you rigid! But a brief outline for your carp fishing-first of all select your rod,the length in most cases is imaterial the action and test curve being more important. These are dictated more by the distance you will be fishing, and the conditions eg weed, snags you will be liable too encounter than the size of the fish you will be catching.A rough guide -close in 1 3/4lbs-2lbs,2 1/4lbs -2 1/2lbs medium and 2 3/4-3lbs+ for long range. The action of the rod should in general be more through/compound for close in and faster taper for longer range. This takes in to acount the need to cast to the fish set the hook but not pull it out.Once the rod has then been selected using these criteria then the reel can be matched to it.In the proper hands all balanced set ups will cast a long way.For a long distance set up you would choose the heavier actioned, faster tapered rods. The large spooled "Big Pit" style reels are the ideal match.Their large spools assist greatly in reducing line drag on the cast making 120m casts even with heavy(15lb)mainlines achievable for most. The lsrge spool coupled with a high gear ratio also helps you to recover all that line quickly as well. The down side is that they are heavy and cumbersome.Thats why most competent sea anglers use multipliers. On a carp rod they feel unbalenced and ungainly. If you need those extra yards with the heavy line then this is the price you must pay.Where casting long distances is not so important then you can choose a lower test curve rod with a more through action. The advantages of this are that you will have less chance of a hook pull at close range and I believe this type of action lands fish quicker. So if this is the rod you require there is no point putting a massive great pit reel on it.All the disadvantages but you dont need any of the advantages.A much nicer or balanced set up would use a Mitchell 300 /Shimano6010 size reel more than capable of making the required distance but also more pleasant to use. When amongst weed or heavy snags I would use the same through/compound action but in around 2lbTC+ In fact the rods you have at 2 1/4 make a nice compromise for medium range work dont spoil the feel of them by whacking on great big beachcasters!Keep them for when you need the extreme distance.A bit abreviated but I hope it is of some help?Feel free to ask any other details,I certainly dont know it all but will always try to help on tackle queirys.

Richard, Budgie,Thank`s for the advice,i will look at the shimano`s 10000xte`s and the 6010`s,not up on bait runner`s as I haven`t got on with them in the past, but I thimk it`s about time to try again.

Les, the 6010 has been replaced by the 6000. I have had my 6000GTE's paired up with my 2.25lb rods for about 18 months and they have been great. You should be able to pick them up for about ?75 (maybe less for three). If you don't want to pay that much try E-bay for 6010's there are normally quite a few on offer.

What`s the differance between the 10000xte`s and the 10000xt`s?,only there`s a pair of xt`s on e-bay.

Les,

I suggest you email the seller and check that is not a typo. 12000xt's are sea reels, so make sure of what you are getting.

I bought a pair of Okuma longbow LB50`s because they looked good value as a spare pair of reels, but to be honest i use them more than the 6010`s i had been using, they are smoother, hold more line, the clutch is brilliant and the range of adjustment on the b/r is much better, they come with one ali spool and one graphite and two proper rubber side plate gaskets, they actually make two versions ,one with brass gearing and one with stainless steel gearing and surprisingly the price is the same for both. They may not appeal to the tackle tarts, (not expensive enough) but then again how many carp/tench/catfish ,can read what it says on the side of your reels .

Les some info Shimano 10000XTE 510 yards of 10lb bs, 420 x 12bs, 350 x14, 290 x 16, 210 x 20. 7 ball bearings. Gear ratio of 4.5 to 1. Weighs 573 gms or 20.2 ozs. Long nosed tapered spool. Aluminium spare spool.

Glen,Cakey, the guy did get back to me,they are xte`s,trouble is ,Iv`e seen a lot for sale on e-bay and they tend to sell for for top doller, which defeat`s the object.
Richard, they do seem to be up to the job,and the price you quote is about right.

lets assume we can only afford to buy one set of good quality reels. in order to cater for all senarios i have infinty x's which i have found to be far superior to the shimanos i have used in the past. nope i cant cast 300 yards but i may need to boat some baits out that far and thats why i have them. if you can afford to buy various sets of reel s for whatever senario you fish then you are lucky.
and for the record cakey uses big pits for everything!
