Film/digi pics

Warren Gaunt asked if anyone knew a cheaper way to get film scanned to a CD a few weeks back.

I've tried Boots' new service today, they'll dev a film and scan it to a CD in high/low res jpeg format for around ?7.

I looked at the images I got on Nikon film cameras/lenses against images taken by photographers at work on Nikon D1H digitals and the quality's not far off.

I used 400 or 800ASA Kodak/Fujicolour Press films, the latter had little noticeable grain on an uncropped A4 print.

No "noise" on the images and once I'd downloaded them onto my hard drive I could tart them up in Phoroshop.

Certainly good enough for newspaper/web reproduction, might be the answer for anyone who's got decent film kit who either can't afford to switch to a digi system, or who's waiting for the price to come down/resolution to go up.

They'll also scan negs to disc for ?2.50 a film - some places charge this much an image.

Might be worth a look, only thing is they don't do slides yet if you use slide film.
