Winter waterproofs

Fellas,
First of all I know this subject has been covered before.
I've decided on getting myself a waterproof jacket and overtrousers for the forthcoming winter.
I don't want anything too warm as I'll be walking some distance to get to my swims on the river and I won't be sat under a bivvy all day either, so no need for minus 10 siberian suits!!!
Ideally it must be windproof and breathable as well.
I saw a two-piece suit from ESP at a shop today and it looked the business, wasn't my size though or I might have bought it there and then. If I need extra warmth I can wear long-johns and a fleece underneath.
Any comments or suggestions???

Oh, forgot to mention. Lowest price that I've found for the above is ?121.50.
If anyone knows of a lower price that would be great.

Go with the army gear Richard. I've had a gortex jacket and trousers for 2 seasons now and its still going strong. Cheaper and probably better than the tackle company branded clobber.

every time.

Wear as little or as much as you want underneath and leave it in your rucksack if it doesn't rain.

Gary, could you recommend a particular make?
There's so much out there it's difficult to choose.

Rodney and Andrew, I looked at the goretex clothing at Transworldsurplus and it seems OK. I can get fully kitted out for half the price of the ESP jacket and trousers.
Trouble is that I really don't want to creep about the bankside looking like Andy McNab on SAS patrol!

Richard,

Creep about the bankside looking like Andy McNab on SAS patrol...I would. Its cheaper and definitely the answer. Especially if you are creeping about.

I was fortunate that my brother in law is in the army and he gave me his army issue overtrousers and jacket. It's unbeleivable - when boat fishing in atrocious condition I can wear it all day and be bone dry when I take them off.

I'd look in any ex army supply shop to get some. Make sure they are bona-fide gore-tex and bona-fide army issue and you wont go wrong...

Transworld surplus is probably OK but I have no personal experience of them.

I've got army issue jacket and trousers from Transworld for summer wear.....French jacket, Belgian overtrousers. Very waterproof, but not warm so bear that in mind with sizing, you need layers underneath in winter.

Another issue to consider is that by and large the army gear does not have external pockets. This might not matter to you but I use a Sundridge suit in the winter so I've got warm and dry pockets I can put my hands in.

i have just recieved my "prologic" jacket and bib'n'brace and although i havn't actually worn it out yet , i can reccomend it for comfortable wear. the jacket is 100% waterproof and breathable but quite soft to the touch. it appears really flexible and theres not as much "swish" as some of the other suits/jackets i've looked at. has anyone else got the prologic gear? i'd like some feedback if poss. cheers

Rich,

I've been wearing my current set of goretex for the last ten years or so. (although I do admit to taking it off at home!!)

Its been everywhere with me, and kept me dry without fail.

The issued stuff is very good, although the jacket can do with some improving, but overall its the dogs dangly bits.

Worth every penny, best bit of kit I had in the army........

Army surplus goretex every time. But dont get British kit! The Dutch, Swedish, German armies are kitted out much better.....

Paul C. The Pro Logic kit sounds good. Where can I find some more details?

Paul T. What make of goretex do you use?

Stuart P. I've seen the prices for the Sportchief clothing - a bit beyond my budget unfortunately.

Stuart B. Thanks, but I understand that the ex-military kit is short on pockets. As I've already said though, I don't really want to look like part of a SAS patrol. I'd feel like a right p**ck.

By the way, I've just received a catalogue from Halkon-Hunt. Great kit but quite expensive. A specialist jacket plus bib & brace will set you back ?340.00.
Once again, way above my budget. Makes me wonder if they could double their turnover if they halved their prices!

The general concensus is that goretex is the thing to get. Apart from military kit, what makes do others wear on their fishing trips? Actual makes please, so that I can sift through the info and make an informed choice. Thanks fellas.

Richard,

Everyone seems to be leaning towards the Goretex stuff, but you're original question was about the ESP clothing. I bought one of the ESP bib & braces about 3years ago, apart from a rip on the knee (why do farmers insist on barbed wire on top of fences?) it is still warm, waterproof in all but the most torrential rain & what I consider to be the best bit, totally wind proof. Honestly, even the iciest of winter winds doesn't cut through it. It is also very comfortable, lightweight & "quiet" when you're moving about.

They also now sell the ESP jackets separately (originally only available with the overtrousers combined) - I got one last year (?55 I think) to go with the B&B. Again, I think it is spot on. Very warm, comfy & windproof. Not really tested it in heavy rain yet, I'm sure it will be absolutely fine except in the worst of conditions. To be honest, if it's forecast torrential rain, either stay at home or take your brolly....

One last point, it also seems very quick drying as well.

Thanks for the info Steve. My local tackle shop will be stocking some more ESP clothing soon. I'll definately have to go and try on a set before I decide on what to buy.
At the moment, I'm also looking at the Prologic range from Svendsen Sports.

BTW. Yes, barbed wire is a pain isn't it?
I cannot see why farmers should use it so much either. Probably comes down to price I expect!!!

i brought an ocean set of waterproofs had them 2 months nd they split all round the pockets on the jacket and the bottoms tore putting them on. i brought a cheap pair of bottoms for a ?5, and not had no problems with them even wading in to the sea to just below my waist, i going to get the jacket on my next visit to the shop

GE,

Where did you get the ESP jacket from? like you I got the bib and brace sometime ago but can not seem to get the jacket on its own from any where, they want to sell you the whole suit.

Must agree the ESP is vey light weight and its the best I have had for ease of movement which is importantant when moving from swim to swim.

Rich,

Sorry mate, my goretex is genuine army issue stuff. Although it is DPM, it really is some of the best stuff on the market...

That's OK Paul, no need to apologise at all.
I know that I am limiting my options by not wanting ex-military gear but I think that if I do enough looking around, I should be able to get myself kitted out for the winter in a suit designed for angling.
As I said previously, it must be waterproof and breathable (gore-tex or similar)and something in which I can walk in without becoming too hot. My budget is around ?130 and at the moment it looks like either ESP or Prologic.
