Copied from a report on Bluefin Tuna fishing off Donegal. http://www.rosguill.com/charter.frames.html

The last line says it all!

What do you think?

Today there were a few sightings of Tuna at Rathlin O' Beirne.
Trevor Ryder had a hook up off Downings but the line broke at the Bimini twist. A lot of activity off Downings.
A purse seiner is reputed to be working out of Killybegs targeting Bluefin."

Colin, how's things?
I'm really sorry to read this but I'm amazed it hasn't happened before.
Unfortunately same old story - if we were fishing for a living, the other stocks being as they are, the chance of more than a few quid the tuna represent............ well?
Thing is it sounds as if a foreign boat so not even locals will benefit.
Then again look at the mackerel, probe a little deeper & begin to hear of locals catching, then taking out to the Russian/etc factory boats outside limits.
How long is was the average wait between shoals this season?

As recently report in the Irish Times...

The Marine Institute has teamed up with Stanford University (?) to tag 10 blue fin tuna around Ireland and use satellite tracking to record their progress and maps their routes. Equally the transponders will send in information on water temperature, daylight and other data. The overall goal is to establish a managed sport fishery similar to one still available in North Carolina...

Well, one up for intelligent fishery management. Well do the MI and the skippers on the western seaboard who have already introduced a voluntary albeit limited catch and release scheme and who agitated sufficiently for this kind of research in the first place...
