Lure Rods

I am after several lure rods, one for Perch/trout and one for pike. I want both to be about 7 feet, the perch one to chuck 3-15g the pike one 15-40g roughly.

I would prefer a blank as I like to build my own, and it needs to be fairly quick actioned. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check those Daiwa Vulcan graphite rods. Stiff as a poker, rated 20 - 40g. Light as a feather and very slim, haven't managed to break one yet either, pick them up round here for about ?40.

This is going to sound so snobby, but I am after something a little more "upmarket". I really would prefer a blank, probably around the ?40 to ?80 mark, and of a hih carbon content.

Thanx anyway, and I shall look at them as i want something for fishing from a boat so that needs to be tough.
Cheers

Rob, speak to Rob Thompson at Game-on tackle.
His rods go from medium spinners thru to enormous jerkbait thingies.
Fantastic quality, shame he doesn't do an ultralite (

Rob,

I bought a Shimano 'heavy' spinning rod rated 50-100 grammes. Ultra slim, very light, full cork handle with reel housing, superb finish. As usual with Shimano its now last years model and already selling for half price - I think I paid about ?50 for it.

Its 'tippy' enough to throw lures lighter than the recommended 50g but has plenty of backbone and I have already played some good fish on it.

If your going to the match tomorrow I'll bring it along to let you have a look. Let me know....

Gary,
Does that rod have a trigger grip or straight handle........i'm thinking about giving lure fishing a serious go this year.....if i can face a whole day doing it!!...)

I was like this for a long time, believe you me. Once I got into it, I found it was fascinating - even if it never delivered anything of any size.

Chris,
I must admit to only dabbling with lure fishing in the past even though i spent many years piking.
I know from friends that lure fishing can be fast and furious on the Severn at times and my own line of thought is get on the Wye and spent all day exploring.....looks like raiding all the junk shops for the ladles and big serving spoons, i don't fancy the idea of parting with to much dosh!!

PAul,

Straight handle - that was you can use a fixed spool as well as a multiplier.

Anglers Workshop do a cracking rod called the 6-9 special. U can have it built anyway u want and I would recommended it to anyone wanting a crankbait/light jerkbait rod.

Paul, check out Harris, their own-label spoons are only a couple of quid each and I've had loads of pike on them - esp the one that looks like a desert spoon, which actually spins when you retrieve it and the big Atlantics, esp chrome/brass and the black striped one.

They also do a cheap Toby copy and one or two other classics. Peter Waller wrote a great article about classic lures on the predator-fishing site a while back.

Cheers Chris,
I have a great deal of faith in spoons....i had quite a few pike on them one year when lives were in short supply on downriggers made from concrete filled coke cans!! or just trailed from the back of the boat.
I'll have to get on the lures though, i can't keep ignoring these easy ) trout waters....and there are more to come i hear!!

I agree with Chris. (now there's a thing, me agreeing with somebody). The Diawa Vulcan is a good rod with enough action to flick a light lure but enough beef to handle a big fish. It's no good for specialist stuff but an excellent all rounder. I also have a Caliber "Derek Gibson" lure rod. This was quite expensive but really is a superb rod. It has a trigger grip, fairly through action and playing fish on it is a delight.
I have a cheap jerkbait rod of 6ft too - for jerkbaiting!
