Which Rods?

ok guys...... if you could only afford to carry one pair of decent rods around...which test curve would you choose?...
Most if my fishing is done at either close margin, or at the very most 60yards, with running leads (2oz normally). I suppose realisticlly my target fish would be in the "no more than 25lb" bracket, BUT i fish a variety of lakes ranging from pits, to silty ponds, to weedy lakes...

There are some good offers on at then moment, i like daiwa rods, i already have several, i also like the fox rods......realistically i'm not looking to pay more than about ?250 for the pair.....

What do you reckon?...

i'd say 2 1/2, though i only have 1 set of rods and they are 3lb! i do a lot of bag/hethod fishing, and often at 60yd+

I have two sets of rods one set is my distance/french/pva bag rods the other set are greys prodigy 2 1/2 tc and these are great rods nice tip action plenty of power in the butt if you want to lauch a lead/small bag and for around 180 quid a pair top value. One of the few things i own where I have got more than I paid for.

1 3/4lb or 2lb max if the water was very weedy.

nah, you'll never land a fish on 1 3/4lb test rods budgie you silly boy-go to the back of the class(LOL honestly!)

wouldnt like to chuck a pva bag around with them though. the problem with having one set of rods is what happens when you visit a bigger lake (and yes i know they still get in the margins) or want to cast further, or if you want to use method/big bags/big leads. 1 3/4 would seriously limit your flexibilty, unless you got a boat....

aaah, i remember the days, a set of 11 ft 1 3/4 north westerns for margins, 11ft 2 1/4 hardy graphites for medium range and 12ft 2 3/4 tricasts for long range. god forbid i had 1 in the margin, 1 medium and 1 long - the buzzer bars looked a right mess!

Why do the rods have to be a pair, so you look good?

As Dave says, different rods for different situations and if you are fishing differently on the same water, then have two different rods.
Doesn't that sound simplistic.

I think more people would do that if they were fishing alone on lakes, the biggest problem, is being viewed as a 'noddy' by the local mafia because you don't have all the latest matching gear.

Peer pressure? What's that?

PVA bags and method feeders! You will be suggesting the rods arnt made of cane next Dave!!
would the 2's not lobb either of these the required distance (60yrds max)? I dont know as a traditionalist like myself wouldnt use such devices!!!
Good point made by both Dave and Rik about not having to have matching TC rods.Surely in its purist form the whole idea of fishing multiple rods is to be able to use different methods at different ranges.Especially when learning a new water?

It's good to be back Dave ;o)

Yes Budgie, 2's would do the job.
My 1 3/4 NW's will lob a method feeder or bag across the Severn, which is over 60yds, but in the longevity stakes, I'm not certain.
Besides 1 3/4 is alright for barbel, but carp fight much harder, so I'd have to say that a 2 is the minimum.

Personally, a thru action 2 for close to mid-range and a stiffer 2 1/2 for further out/snags/weed/big bags.
A thru-action rod is perfect for feeder/bag work if you adapt your casting style and lob more than punch.

you could buy the same rod, but in different tc's if your that worried....

I don't think that would work Dave.
Mass produced, imported carbon would be of the same action, but different TC's.
To get a different action, you would need a completely different blank, which would mean sourcing it from another 'maker'.

Mind you, if you're that bothered about how your rods look, then you're probably not that bothered about whether you're going to catch or not, so the action and playing skills of the rod would be secondary to it's aesthetic appeal.

I'm a little dissapointed that nobody has come back about my barbel comment.

you mean your meant to catch a fish rik?

i think your right about the barbel rik, but they rarely get abouve double figures so they're not worth catching anyway...;)

Ahhh just like old times, Barney and Rik at it again.

Big man (or as I gather now, not so big) how are you?

For my money, I'd get one at 2 and one 2.5 just in case you want the added protection for lobbing out big methods or something.

....and its 'ows that if he was ****ie Bird.

And Dave, bollix!

Just noted the comment about matching rods. I cant believe people seriously care about that surely.

thing is stu, 99% of what i say is tongue in cheek, but there are those that believe it and get suckered by the marketing everytime. but then thats the same for all fishing tackle, pc's, cars, sausages, viagra, whatever!

.......dont worry, I'd be a liar if I had said I never thought about it. Although in fishing its one time I dont give a flying fig what I look like, or what I fish with, from an aesthetics point of view.
