Do the NFA really know what they're doing?

Personally I don't.

Never has there been more of a moment for ALL the anglers of Britain to get together and from a truly national body, without the traditions and prejedices of the past.

But who can form it?

i read this in one of the weeklies last week, that they were thinking of leaving and i've got to admit i'm mystified by the decision.
angling should be standing as a united group.

It was reported that John Wright had started this, but on the Keith Arthur Talk Sport radio show he said that it was untrue. I like many often wonder what the NFA is as all about. When people criticise them for only being interested in match fishing they deny this, so please let them tell all what they are about because I certainly don't know.

match fishing john, and thats all they are interested in nothing else at all.
which makes the representative of a rapidly diminishing branch of the sport.

in my mind it would be much better to wind them up ans join the salmon and trout lobby at least they get results.

If any body was going to be a party-pooper I would put money on the NFA.

I just think they are so full of their own importance and don't want to share the limelight. They could have been top dog 20-30 years ago, but they're the ones who have thrown away a golden opportunity and continue to do so.

Probably The National Association of Fisheries and Angling Consultataives (NAFAC) would be a better option for most clubs.(dont do match fishing though) My club joined and they offer a great rsange of rervices to the memebership - and they talk to Government.
And,compared to most insurance quotes we were given,we arranged a great public liability cover through them

I've 'worked' for, and on behalf of the NFA for over 5 years in a coaching/education capacity, as has Brian Jackson who also contributes here occasionally, (sorry Brian:) indeed I still occupy a 'position' theirin.

I cannot nor would not argue with anything here, and I've asked the question before, but, I'll ask again....How does an organisation become a 'national governing body'?

So.....how does an organisation become a 'national governing body'?

You have to EARN the respect of the nation's anglers, Eddie.

It's as simple as that, but it does strike me that the NFA has been going its own way for years now. No-one is going to respect any outfit that ignores the majority veiw. A true shame as well.

How does an organisation become a 'national governing body'? simple, it doesnt Eddie, because of its structure it can`t and I don`t think it was every designed to specifically do that, or if it was, it lost its way a long time ago, what it does do or should be doing is to support the organisation which does, and it was working towards this end until recently. Angling can only be fully represented under a specialist political umbrella, which must encompass all branches of the sport.

Well done on your past efforts for angling by the way Eddie

No, Eddie, when I said "You" I was using it collectively as belonging to an organisation in order to answer your question "So.....how does an organisation become a 'national governing body'?"

I wasn't refering to you (Eddie) personally.

Issues I have seen and read about over the past ten years that have been commented on by leaders within the NFA, I am surprised they still exist at all. They must have upset just about every aspect of our sport including matchmen who are their strongest supporters, probably. I don't think they have done anything to EARN the respect of any anglers.

Got ya Jeff, no offence taken or intended.

Thanks Monkey! Although my efforts were/are minimal compared to some and weren't 'for' the NFA as such, although I have/do wore their badge, my efforts were solely for the young people whom I coached and for the new coaches I helped to train, and as such, it is far easier to do that when you are part of a bonafide nationally recognised organisation.

Try offering your services as a football coach without being affiliated to the FA, not a chance!

My point is that the NFA is the sports national governing body, but how does an organisation (for any sport) get that title, is there an application process or is it a self proclaimed type thing?
