After a recent fire at a metal finishing company ( Abbey metal finishings). The water the fire service used to put out the blaze has contaminated the local river Anker, that runs at the back of the factory with cyanide. This has killed most of the fish along the river, i walked the river today and counted around 20 + fish dead on the side ranging from chub, pike and perch. Should the EA make the company pay for the damage they have done to the local river, as it will take years to get back to normal.

Just briefly on this matter - any water polluter when caught, under the 'polluter pays principle' enacted by The Water Resource Act, would have to pay for all EA costs, contractor costs, clean up costs, restocking, etc. This is normally applied to every pollution regardless of whether a company is prosecuted or not.

For info - the clean up costs can sometimes far out weigh the fines that the judiciary impose.

Cheers, Jon
