The big news at the moment is that Microsoft, who have over 90% of the software market in the world are to be fined a paltry amount for standing in the way of competitors.

As far as I am concerned, MS need to modernise and get up to date. We still have times when everything is painfully slow. We still have many programmes that are poorly presented and not very user friendly.

And we still have horrible pop-ups, Porn websites, awful advertising and misleading info on the website.

And do you know what? Microsoft sit back and allow it to happen.

It is now time I think for them to give us a proper service and to stop pandering for example to the perveyors of porn, junk, the Britney Spears and Becks of this world as well as websites that promote anarchy and anti-anything that is good.

Let's have an internet devoted to international peace, tolerance and understanding.

Let's eliminate the dross for goodness sake.

And let's have an internet that is technically efficient and truly user friendly.

Isn't that just censorship???

Surely its not for you and I or anyone to say they shouldn't look at porn if they want to is it ?????

If people want to look at porn Ed, it should not be made available for anyone under the age of 21 years to access freely.

I'm not against sites which portray the beauty of sex, or anything of that nature, but some of the sites are utterly revolting you have to agree; and in some cases, they are forced on people.

Anything that encourages woofterism, paedophilia, demonism, pornograghy or other such evils has to be eliminated and the people who push such shit, destroyed.

And I mean, destroyed!

They are as bad, if not worse than international terrorism!

back to your original point Ron, what have Microsoft got to do with the state of the internet?

That's like blaming Fords because the streets are filled with litter.

Not sure its microsoft who are to blame Ron,They in no way have control over what`s on the internet they just make software so you can accsess it.The main problem is porn websites make big money because its what people are prepaired to pay for, just look at the programme on tv the other night on child sex on the internet(one site made ?1 million a week!!!).
There wouldnt be any pop up`s if nobody clicked and then paid for whatever it was the pop up advertised.(same as junk mail).

The reason microsoft got fined ?331 million was because there "media player 9" that they bundle free of charge with the windows operating sytem was judged to of broken competition laws. The fact that the player is the most up to date way of veiwing movies and listening to audio seems to count for nothing. And now they are going to be made to release there code so the compition can catch up.
Why didnt we do this when VHS crushed beta max in the video tape war`s?
Should the BBC give CH 5 money and technical help so they can become as big a broadcaster?

I built my own pc and made the choice to use microsoft XP on my pc i wasnt forced into it,I could of used apple or linux software but choose microsoft because it was the best and most up to date sytem on the market and still is.

Dont shoot the messanger if you dont like the message.

I get your point Rik.

But it should not be beyond MSs expertise to come up with much better business and home programmes than they have now.

I get the feeling that many of their systems are designed to crash. We have regular crashes at work, about 2 a month, and we have to pay extortionate sums for an IT specialist to come and fix it. Not only that, we get viruses. I truly think that these such things should have been eliminated years ago.

Although I might not know how to work computers as well as some of the wiz kids, I probably know far more about how computers work.

We truly do not have to put up with the crap we have from MS. Their systems must be made more foolproof from tampering by hackers and illigitimate pilferers.

The last thing I want is a bloody pop up advert appearing on my computer when I log on and want to do some work or look at FM.

Let true competition take place amongst computer software companies. Let's eliminate monopolies.

There are a hell of a lot more motor car companies in the world today than Ford.

And by the way Alan, It should not be beyond modern technology to track down the perveyors of child sex sites.

Down to the actual address.

And then send in a task force of SAS and destroy them.

If we can do this against Al Qaeda and Saddam, we can do it against these b....ds.

Agreed Ron but why should microsoft be blammed for it,or made to invent the software to track them down?

Not long ago there was another case against Microsoft, there inbuilt java machine was found to break the same competition laws and was removed from the windows OS,now you have to search for download and use a 3rd party`s java software programme. This means when you try and open a website that uses java your pc has to find and run the software to open it slowing down your surfing.
If the same had happened to the media player 9 the best of the rest is Real Player,at the moment you can download a free version with little or no option`s unless you want to upograde to a pro version at ?11.99 a month!!
Without media player 9 being free they would no doubt charge a small monthly fee for the basic version of real player.A fee i dont want to pay but it seems thats what all the Microsoft bashers out there want.

Eddie, can you pop across to Port Sunlight sometime, I just thought of a terrific belated Birthday present for our Ron. A soapbox - I'll go halve with you.

Sorry Ron just trying to calm it down a little.

For me, Microsoft did abuse the power they were given. Yes given. It was IBM who first made Billionaire Bill what he is and all credit to him to some extent. But I knew beack in the mide 80's that he had the money either to buy out lots of software companies and destroy them or to simply lower the price of his own software until he drowned the market with Microsoft. And that is what has happened.

In many cases MS office products were given with PCs as lost leaders and some other manufacturers' fabulous software ahs now been lost forever. MS Word is the absolute pits of a word processor and yet it is used in probably 98% of all office establishments. Why? Because no-one now knows anything better, but I used to swear by WordPerfect and still do. A lot of my stuff is constructed with WordPerfect and then copied to Word if it needs to be in that deplorable format.

I shall never forgive Microsoft for killing off what used to be a vibrant and very competitive market full of new ideas all the time.

most of them will be listed companies, with addresses, telephone numbers etc, but what your (purposefully) forgetting ron is that its legal in the countries they're based...

most people want to be able to take a machine out of a box and have it work without the need for paying for loads of extra media players, imaging software, web browsers etc. this is what windows does. xp's also pretty stable, at work we only get a tiny percentage of probs with xp when compared to '98 and 2000/NT (which is what xp's based on) and even linux based. most of the time "crashes" are down to all the cr*p people install and have running without the need to have it running (like real player seems to) or when people start fiddling with the registry for no apparent reason. pop-ups etc can all be stopped with a decent firewall.

bring back the dragon!

Be honest Dave - do you really think that Word is a really good word processor?

And what about that dog's breakfast of a comedy called Publisher?

And as for MS Access - I've removed it from my desktop now. What happened to Ashton-Tate?

Excel was crap until it copied, sorry - emulated routines from Lotus 1-2-3.

All of these programs have been responsible for the demise of other software houses' really good products. And since then there has been very little in the way of new development or thinking. If there's no competition the market stagnates.

At the end of the day we have a choice as consumers, We don't have to by there products. That goes for any avenue of purchasing well anything really. Most PC's are sold with an operating system installed as well as applications which are buddelled together as part of the deal. You don't have to have this installed but we choose to say yes OK.
MS are the biggest but by no means the best PC software provider but i bet most users are running an MS operating system, Internet Explorer as well as the office suite of apps. I support most of the MS apps in a large company it keeps me in a job so i can't complain to much.

Jeff, I think you've got a bit of an anti-MS thing going here.

You're not a MAC user are you?

Excel is not crap, it is the best speadsheet software available in any market, it also doubles as a very powerful database, if you're clever enough(or dull enough) to use it to it's potential then you'd realise how good it is.
90% of people only use 10% of it's capabilities.

Word is good, not brilliant but good.
Access is the best database product available to the public, it knocks Paragon into a cocked hat.

I'm no lover or devotee of MS and will use the best product available to me, if it happens to be an MS product, then I'm not too stupid or proud to use it, or to admit that it is a good one.

thing is jeff, most people couldnt give a monkeys, as rik says, they use a tiny percentage of its capabilities. most people just want to browse the web, send/receive emails, print out their igital stills, play music/video and type a letter or two. windows does all that without having to spend hours looking for all the right bits and pieces.

And yet again our computer system - XP Windows Professional, crashed twice at work today.

Our IT specialist is at the moment at a loss. We have the best Firewalls and Anti-Virus systems money can buy, but the bloody lot crashed.

Talk about bloody frustration. I have lost three vitally important files I was working with.

It's no good. The systems today DO need improving but when ARE we going to get something better?

If you ask me the whole of the computer software industry stinks!!
