i have just bought some carpticle and it smells heavily of ainiseed.
is aniseed a good attractor for carp, tench,bream etc?

They certainly won't object to it(don't know about bream, never fish for them). I use Red Band pigeon conditioner which also smells of aniseed.

Seem to remember that aniseed was one of very very few additives available before the carp bait revolution.
