I plan a bit of chubbing this winter & I need a good quiver rod.I have an original JW Avon which I used for everything years ago and damned fine it was too...but having dug it out of the shed & had a waggle it seems a horrible old thing now.

Having had a look around it seems my choice is limited

A new JW Avon

Drennan Specialist Avon [Puddle chucker]

Drennan Super Specialist duo [11/4 tc]

Any recommendations ? Dont want anything heavier and I have a lovely light rod and a SS Duo at 1.5 tc already...but its a bit heavy for what I want ie a decent allround chub rod.

I use a Drennan 11/4" - 13ft medium feeder rod (at the 11/4" length) for all my chubbing now skips.

The blurb says that the rod will not lock out when you have a fish on....and it is true!

Can take lines to 8lb, so the odd barbel is on the cards, great with feeders, soft enough without.

It was reccomended to me by FM regular Sean Meeghan, and aftertwoJohn Wilson rods, I am megga happy with it.

Cheers mate, Deanos!

Hello Skippy is your old rod a John Wilson Avon twin tip one an avon and one a quiver, if so Ihave been looking to buy one for my grandson, he usesmine at the moment, he caught his first barbel on this rod and will not use anything else. If it is infair condition I would be interested ifyou wanted to sell. The new John Wilson avon is a cracking rod , see Review Section. you can buy these rods for as little as £64,99 .

Okay....

I am just off out to the garage to have a look mate!

Drennan medium feeder 11ft6 combo (extension to take it up to 13ft).

Tips from 1 1/2oz to 3oz.

Casting weights 10g to 60g+

You can fish hard against snags for chub with this rod, a great bit of kit.

It is not quite as "soft" as the Wilson Avon Skips, but it suits me down to the ground.

Give it a bend in the tackle shop/forum/smilies/big_smile_smiley.gif

It is one of the original JW's bought in JW's shop from the man himself.I only ever used the quiver section and I seem to recall throwing the Avon top away years ago as I thought it was awful. What's left is in a shocking state...I suppose its useable but would need a lot of TLC to bring it back, hence my need for a new rod which would probably work out cheaper.

So...given Deano's recommendation and the fact that I would only ever use the rod in quiver mode I guess I should be looking at feeder rods.

Given also that I'm only an occasional "pleasure" chubber and dont want to spend a lot mightan 11 ft carp feeder do ? LikeDrennan'sPuddle chucker ? I've waggled some of this range and they are not bad at all.

Or I should rebuild the JW ?

Mr Kippy, If its only for occasional use why dont you use your float rod, I find them nearly as good, didnt you get that Drennan11 ft rod a bit back as well?.

Mr Spiders

Genius ! I had not considered the Drennan pellet rod.It is a fabulous little bloke, extremely versatile and I recommend it without reservation.I've used it to chuck a small method feeder so I dont see why it shouldn't cope with a bit of chubbing.Lovely action too.

You havevery likelysaved Mrs Skippy a few quid. She can get her hair done now.

And I am going to refurb the old Wilson because I can and for the sheer hell of it.

I see we're still here then !

Well for my two penneth, I would say that you can't beat the Drennan Series 7 Specialist Avon Quiver (1.25lb version). Fantastic rod with very well matched quiver tips.

Makes a great floater rod with avon top aswell!

Only thing I would say is..... Mr. Drennan, please, please, please can you make an 11' version. This would be brilliant for the smaller rivers.
