Things you don't need on a rod...

There must be so many things that manufacturers list as features and whilst some may be nice to have they offer no usable benefit and are completely unnecessary in any practical sense.

I'll start the ball rolling...

2-piece folding hook keepers - the moving half of the one attached to my Kevlar barbel rod pinged off into the undergrowth when I was moving swims.

Flashy decals and those horrible electric shock warning stickers - why don't they simply print it on if it's a legal requirement?

Oh how I hate those things ! That's the first thing that I take off and then spend an hour removing the glue residue.

And what numpty would stick a rod up an electricity pylon anyway ?

Single leg rings.

Don't say that Rob, I won't be able to piggle 'em off :D

I think reason they put the leccy warning on stickers is so you can remove them if you like.
I like most of the decals on my rods. I like the Hardy decals but it would have been nice if Hardy had put the rods info underneath the blank, same as drennan do.THe drennan hook keeper on the acolytes is too close the the reel seat answer stops you from sliding the small screw down section up the blank a little so you can clean underneath it properly and it also restricts the size of reel foot you can attach.
I do dislike decals that wear off...like the older daily rods.

I think it's a Darwinian test - making sure we don't unleash too many numpties on the bank!:rolleyes::D

Agreed with Tigger on the hook-keeper - not just on the Acolyte!

My personal hate is "flashy" varnish finishes - there are a few rods - e.g. Okuma Match - that have a tasteful matt effect - it should be mandatory - especially on fly rods!

'Things you don't need on a rod'

A reel, so i thought - if you are only after live bait using an old rod in the 70's with the line tied to the first eye............................After being dragged a few hundred yards along the Thames by this ginormous chub..................:wh

If the rod performs to my expectations it can be emblazoned with neon lights for all I care.
Laught if you must but contrary to the above I would also like to see some rods that were camouflaged.:D

I
Ike a hook keeper on a rod , such a small addition I'm not sure why all rods don't have them

They're a bad idea on some downlocking reel seats - when I opened the seat almost all the way to fit a pin on my Fox Avon it fouled on the hook keeper and started to chew up the cork. As luck would have it, I spotted it before any major (i.e. visible) damage had been caused. Pulled the blighters out with pliers when I got back home, so if I ever sell you a Fox Avon or Specialist rod, that's where they went. :D

You'd only end up stepping on it. I know I would.:eek:mg:

I'm amazed no one's mentioned 50mm butt rings yet, especially as you can now buy special neoprene pouches that go over them to protect them :eek:mg:

I would far rather never again see:

1. A picture of a carp or barbel on my rod - I know what I will be using it for

2. Neoprene as an integral part of the handle

3. Logos or stickers of any nature

Things I like to see:

1. The recommended Casting weight

2. The Test curve

3. A hook keeper ring
