How do you hook the minnows for perch? lip hooked or back hooked? Big perch are definitely on my agenda this and next year!

Lip hooked works for me Stu. If you are fishing for big perch minnows may be a bit on the small side. Have you seen the size of the mouth on a big perch. You would probably be better using livebaits of about 4" (I have caught perch on far bigger ones) or double lobworm. On some waters the perch seem to prefer livebaits and on others worms. Deadbaits can also be worth trying for the bigger ones.

Stuart (Palfrey), not just for the user reviews stuart, this Tackle and Bait section can be used for any tackle and bait discussions. It's just home for the user review discussions as well.

I know it sounds daft but I know someone who regularly caught 3lb-plus perch on 4 - 6oz roach.

Graham,
It doesn't sound daft to me at all. I have caught perch on 4-6oz roach and rudd myself, although I prefer slightly smaller baits if I can catch them.

How do you catch 4-6 oz roach? , only joking.
Can recommend Enterprise Tackle, plastic hempseed, but persevere,it's a confidence thing, now for the casters,no confidence in them ...yet

I have limited experience of catching perch on livebait, but when you look at the gob on a three-pounder a 6oz roach is no problem. It's just that when you think about a fish readily taking baits an eighth of its body weight it makes you realise that a big carp could take a boilie like a cricket ball.

And I've caught a lot of pike on baits that were more than 50% of their weight. And I've got a picture of a 12lb pike and its prey that spewed up a 3lb tench.

i've actually had a perch take another perch that was 6" long while fishing for roach with maggot.
as for live baits lip hooked bleak or dace up to 5 inches long do the trick for me
or 2 or 3 lobworms.
only caught smaller ones up to 3-8 this year though.
