Hello to All.

Recently a friend of mine broke the tip section of a five piece trotter rod near the ferrule (overfit section actually). This rod is no longer made and the makers have confirmed that they have no spares in stock.

I wondered if it is possible to repair the section or even have one made by a specialist maker? I realise that this would possibly exceed the value of the rod but would still be interested within limits.

Thanks for your interest.

All the best

Depending on the original blank is it not possible to cut both parts back and use a pole wrap as a new ferrule maybe as a last resort?

Good luck with your repair quest.

Yes it's possible, I've done plenty similar to that ( just returned a Greys broken salmon spinning rod).
But it will tend to have a flat spot in the short section that is sleeved, not a perfect action and I certainly never guarantee the work as there is always a chance of another break in that area.
Is it worth the cost of repair? Probably yes but not if you have to post it both ways - which likely trebles the cost of the repair!

Looking at the break I dont think a decent repair will be possible (but I am no expert) However I am sure that a new section could be made up for you by a rod maker. They would need to use the right sized blank & cut off the approriate section and re-ring it to the same configuration.

Obviously it wont be the same blank as the rest of the rod so there would be some impact on the action. How much that would be would depend on how close the replacement section of blank is to the rest of the rod. Colour as well may (or may not) excatly match.

I think its do-able although you have to accept it wont be exactly the same rod after. We have some rod builders on the forum who can probably advise in more depth.

Also I know you use the Tackle Box...they can probably advise as well...even if they dont do it themselves they may know someone that does this sort of thing...

I met a guy on the river last October time,he broke a normark titan 2000 and another top end rod,a guy came up and told him to pop round to this guys address in North London(he didn't live far from there),saw the guy who told him some while later and he repaired both to a high standard,so it is possible...

Thanks for your replies.

I had a word with the Tackle Box and they said they would give it a whirl.

I live in Bangladesh so we have a different perspective on postage.

Thanks again for the interest.

Things happen that cannot be repaired in a worthwhile fashion or cost. As hard as it is with a cherished rod I think that if a new replacement could be sourced from perhaps a skilled rod builder then that replacement would hopefully take on the same cherished and perhaps sentimental value as the old rod given a little time and usage?
