Deadbait rods from a boat

Hi all,
I'll be heading back to the UK to take my portabote out for some river fishing along the Soar soon (Leics). I plan to take a medium spin rod to keep busy, and a deadbait on another rod under a float. Can anyone recommend a nice short rod of say, 6' to suit a mackerel sized bait and slider float? All I can find in the way of short rods on the tackle sites are rods for sea fishing which would seem to be a completely different action and not conducive to good pike care to me. I have baitrunner 6000 reels and also some general purpose float rod coarse reels too.

Any suggestions or advice much appreciated!

To be honest I wouldn't go much less than 9' ish with a bait rod. As it allows plenty of room for the trace, up trace if you use one and the float when casting.
I use 10' rods in my 10' portabote with no issues of between 2.5lb test and 4lb test dependant upon the location and conditions.

I am not sure what your budget is but may be worth having a look at Dave Lumbs website. His rods are not cheap but are built on Harrison blanks

You could also try a spinning rod - about 8ft might be a suitable length for boat you have.
