Does anyone take the reel they will be using on rods they have a waggle of in the shops, ?
Without a reel on the rods may feel light ,good action, put a reel on to determine lightness and balance and you will get a better picture.
Most shops will allow customers to put a reel on the rods.

Frequently. Some shop staff and shoppers give funny looks, but fitting a reel can transform the way a rod feels, for good or ill. I've also not been averse to buying a reel to match up to a specific rod. However, I don't go quite as far as having a reel for every rod I own.

I was given a 15ft Ultra but I found it far too light I guess if you were in a match fishing situation for small roach and dace it would be ideal. I sold it on and purchased the 15ft plus to be fair I have not used it yet but there seems quite a bit more powerful than the Ultra.
Ideal if you could control the line and hit the bites.

The Drennan Match pro ultralight is a better rod imo. I have 11’, 13 and 15’ versions, great action and a bit more grunt...

I do have a 17’ Aco however, which is superb for bigger rivers.

Thus says the guvnor.....and I am broadly of the same opinion as I couldn't see what the Acolyte Ultra did that the MP couldn't. Its a bit lighter but the MP isnt a heavy rod and imo very well balanced.I dont trot anything like as much as I used to so my 13' MP does everything I want it to.....if I need something with a bit more grunt then I use my Accy Plus. I have a Marksman Specialist Float too which to my mind is somewhere between the two.

If I did more of this then I might well think about something of a different length....but I dont.

Mmmmm,i've read several accounts on the 'softness' of the Ultra, yes,it is a proper match rod, more suited to light lines, say 3lbs bs or less, but I fished in a peg last winter and had 7 barbel to 6lbs stick float fishing, not what its meant for,but with roach and chub being the real target the rod coped well enough, however,I fished another peg lower down river and found the rod too soft to hoss chub upstream quickly enough,it all depends on what you want,if you need a more powerful rod the Ultra isn't the rod for you,by the way,I wouldn't fish the swim I had the seven barbel from with the Ultra again, but there again I would not go roach and bream fishing with my Cadence #3 13ft,not that you couldn't use it,but it isn't the tool for the job....

The rod I use the most is the acolyte ultra 13 for light stick float up to 8 no4 fishing for dace grayling I find it great. In fact for that purpose its without any doubts the best rod I have ever used. Ok if I was casting a bolo or loafer I would pick another rod. If you constently catching fish of over 3lb again look at something else like the plus model .If you use it for what its designed for its a fab rod.
