Its horses for courses Alan over the years I have fished big waters like Tring and wind swept gravel pits light rods wont cut the mustard. I agree some 1.25tc rods are like pokers. I believe when Walker fished Arlesly all of those years ago he used a 1.50tc carp rod for the extreme distance he needed to fish.

What would you use on a big gravel pit or reservoir at range a .75tc Darenth Valley job???
No,I probably wouldn't fish it,but if you are talking short chucks(60 yards) i'd rather use a feeder rod,even on the helicopter rig,as at least the action is better on a fish playing viewpoint,and as the fish hook themselves against the feeder and drag the rod in like barbel,that is why I don't like the method for roach,it disrespects the species imo...

I am unsure what size the torrix goes down to so I emailed the good Dr at Harrison's. As always, a quick and accurate response. He says the torrix in 11ft goes down to one and half and the 12 to one and a quarter.I rather fancied the torrix made to match the other two( both 1 3/4 in 11 and 12) but ofcourse lighter as near as possible to an avon.Always fancied the hardy but seeing the current one will sell for north of 400 on ebay, maybe not.Oh well gives me something to do. In conclusion I really appreciate the input many of you
have taken the trouble to help me. I am not into social media as I have a weird sense of humour and am renowned for causing offence( where none intended) but nonetheless feel I am chancing my arm. I really enjoy the comments and advice I read. I will endeavour in future to leave it there. Alec

I really liked the look of the 11ft 1.50tc Torrix IMO it is nearest to a true Avon rod in the Torrix range as it has a lovely through action reminiscent of some of the cane and glass classics. In the end I went with the 11ft 1.75tc Torrix as I was looking for a powerful barbel rod to use on the small rivers where the barbel can run to high double figures
Alan I think there is a big difference in catching roach and perch on a soft through actioned Avon stryle rod. My mate was using a pair of 1.25 11ft NW rods yesterday for tench even 6oz rudd were putting a bend in the rod. I agree that many 3.25tc carp rods are like snooker cues which are designed to belt a 4oz lead to the horizon.Years ago there was a ruling on the lake I was fishing that you had to use at least 12lb line when legering. I was tench fishing but ended up catching big roach on boilies I couldn't bring myself to weigh them it didnt feel right.
When we talk about 1.25lb test curve,sadly that is not soft,not for any roach,it is obviously softer than a 3lb+ t.c. rod,but it is not a roach rod,no matter how you write it,so i'm glad I don't fish for roach with one,what you and others do is your choice,but nothing would change my mind on it...
I would agree that there are some 1.25tc rods which are poker like in action you normally get what you pay for. My friend who is an experienced angler uses a pair for big still water roach (not bolt rigging)and reckons they are ideal for 28gram feeders and lovely to play fish on.Test curves can be misleading eg a friend has a 1lb 1oz 11ft Koram rod which is very stiff in action and feels like a rod of a much higher test curve.
I fish a stretch of river with everything from really fast glides to deepish slow pools.

It, for me at least is immeasurably better than the 1.25 avon twin tip it replaced.

Harrison dont make a bad rod I have quite a few. I believe they are the only UK manufacturer now who manufacture rods for the specialist angler. Century used to produce superb rods namely the Armalite range in the lower test curves but dont produce anything now below 2.25tc I believe.
