The Christmas round of matches has got under way in Cornwall with Threemilestone AC being one of the first clubs in the county to hold theirs.

Jeff into a pole bender

The match was fished on the club “Old Pond” and as expected carp were needed to win the day.

Don Kellow started off the action with the first landed carp, which was to eventually win him the match.

Several carp were lost later by a number of anglers, and Jeff Bickell latches into a pole bender. Jeff suspected a “foul hooker” and eventually landing the 8lb common proving his suspicions were right.

It’s mine!

It was a day of what could have been for most anglers with lots of line bites, and fish loss to pullouts and as mentioned earlier foul hooking.

The only lady angler taking part hooked into what was her first landed carp on the pole. The photo shows Amanda’s true delight in landing a 6lb 12oz Common.

Amanda is a regular on the club’s match scene and is as keen as mustard to mix it with the boys. She has only converted to a pole this year and with a little moral support from yours truly, after a 20-minute battle she netted a most valuable fish to give her third place in the Xmas comp.

Amanda and 6.12 common

At the end of the match Don Kellow won the spoils with 12lb 15oz, which included the fine 9lb common pictured.

A more interesting fact was that whilst practising for this match Don caught a slightly bigger Carp? In fact it weighed in at 23lbs 12oz, and is believed to be a pole-caught record for the Threemilestone club. The beast fell to a small bit of corn fished on a 16 Kamasan Animal hook to 0.16 Silstar Match Team line straight through. This rig was well balanced to Don’s 14-16 elastic set-up.
