This new video from Video Active is of particular interest to me, asI had hoped to go on this trip. Unfortunately I had knee problemsthat required urgent surgery and I was therefore unable to goalong.

In Search of The Nile Perch is presented by Barrie Rickards, whohas been on several safaris to Egypt and has accumulated considerableknowledge of the venue and the Nile Perch. This is evidentthroughout the video and together with Tim Baily, this Safari hadgreat potential.

The time of year (August) when the trip was undertaken was quite achallenge, with temperatures soaring to 120F plus, it was going to betough going. The action was probably not as hectic as springfishing, but it was evident this was more than just a fishing trip,it was a week full of fun and excitement.

Video effects at the start of the video I found neat and eyecatching and as one would expect from a professional setup, thequality of the video is excellent throughout. With the number ofboats being used, it was difficult to get eyerything on film withonly one cameraman, so not all the fish caught are shown. Asuccessful attempt, I feel, has been made to try to cover all aspectsof the trip, from the arrival and greetings of the guides, thevastness of the water (Lake Nasser) and the ecology, tackle andrigs/methods/lures etc., the obvious expertise of Tim Baily theexpedition leader, who comes across as a caring evironmentalist andangler, to the excitement of the catch and the hilarity of the toiletfacilities. I thought the “Girlie Boat” section was really hilarious- women!

I will refrain from giving it all away here, but some big fishwere caught and I will probably be making a trip myself in the nottoo distant future.

Of particular interest for me was the potted history and thegeological aspects of the area that Barrie related along with theangling details. Not because I’m more interested in geology thanfishing but they were in a country I have never visited and fishingin an area that looked like the surface of the moon.

Being used to rivers and streams, estate lakes and Cheshire meres, green fields and lush vegetation, it was quite an eye-opener to seerocks and craters and a huge lake smack in the middle of all thatspectacular barrenness.

The heat they had to endure was amazing and, to someone like mewho loves snow and ice, downright frightening.

The fishing was exceptionally interesting and completely differentto what most of us are used to, and the feeling they got when a fishgrabbed a lure was awesome. 2lb or 200lb, you just didn’t know whatwas going to be on the end of your line.

I enjoyed the video, which is different in many ways to the usualfishing video. Which is not surprising considering Barrie Rickardswas the man behind the project.
