Unassuming Longbarn Pool has produced this weeks largest reportedfish, this being a 25lb common carp landed by a day ticket angler andwitnessed by our site bailiff, Dave Sheridan. Dave himself has hadgood results on his water, with his most notable fish being a tenchof 8lb-3-0. Most anglers are catching a full mix of inhabitantspecies, with roach, rudd, bream and perch producing most of theaction.

Tench action still dominates on Whitley Pool with early morningthe most prolific period, this being from first light to about10.30pm when action tails off until 7 pm when sport again takes anupturn. This will be due to, amongst other things, the clarity of thewater which makes anglers presence obvious to the fish.

Last week I conducted a minor experiment by sitting very still ona peg which was frequently patrolled by passing carp. Despite sittingwell back in dark colours, fish moved very markedly away from theirnormal patrol route when they passed in front of me, which gives anindication to their wariness and their ability to spot humanpresence.

The clarity of water in Tabley Moat produces the same situation, margins which are totally devoid of fish during the day are seethingwith them during the hours of darkness, a situation enjoyed by ourmembers who hold night permits.

Bailiff Colin Mercer reported a good days fishing on Sandy Pool atSandbach, for him and his angling companion Sid Mountford. Both werekept busy by roach, bream and rudd, although these were not thespecies that give most sport. The species that did were tench, although plentiful in numbers none were above a few ounces, a goodsign for the future nevertheless. However, Colin’s and Sid’s fish ofthe day came to Colin as a common carp of 22lb, which fell to doublesweet corn on the hook, which was tied to 4lb line.

Lymmvale has continued to produce its remarkable list of specimenfish, with carp to 20lb-6-0, chub to 6lb-0-0, golden orfe to 7lb-3-0,blue orfe to 4lb-15-0, tench to 9lb-3-0, barbel to 6lb-8-0 and to capoff this list of catches that any water body owner would be proud of,is a catfish of 28lb-2.0.

The Sankey Canal has begun to turn up good carp amongst its usualcatches of tench and silver fish. Bailiff, Beryl Trickett haswitnessed three carp landed of over 20lb-0-0, with plenty of reportsof others. Readers, please note that night fishing is only permittedby members who hold a night permit, anybody else fishing during thehours of darkness is breaking the law and subject to arrest underSchedule B of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act. (SAFAC). Manythanks to the Police for their assistance with Club bailiff patrols, arrests have already been made.
