2nd April 2002

Many anglers took advantage of some decent weather and time off work to visit Lymm Angling Club waters over the Easter holiday. Unfortunately action was slowed a little by overnight frosts, although generally there was some significant improvement in the form of most waters.

Match weights have improved on the Warrington Sankey Canal, with bream making up the bulk of match weights. Tench have also showed that they are about to feed in earnest, something they are famous for as the warmth of the springtime sunshine has an effect on the water temperature.

Abbey Lake continues in its current good form, with the occasional tench adding to the roach action.

Tench are also making an impact on Whitley Pool, where last week water keeper Steve Mitchell landed a string of these fish up to 7lb, a fine fish indeed at this time of year. Best bait at the moment is bread, which is also accounting for carp and uncoloured goldfish.

Sue Jupp got the silver orfe on the boil on Spring Pool over the weekend, landing six in a short session with her best being a fine fish of 3lb-8-0. Unfortunately she only had a few maggots, and as they disappeared so did the orfe. However, her action continued with perch up to 1lb happy to take her worm offerings.

Founders Pool continues to produce its roach specimens, although they are definitely harder to tempt in bright weather, although this situation does not impair the feeding habits of smaller roach and other species. Carp are featuring at the moment, as are specimen perch.

The carp in Village Pool are now readily taking floating baits, although all efforts must be taken not to let waterfowl come to any harm, as they will also take floating baits. This means being prepared to reel in as water fowl approach your bait.

Grimsditch Mill Pool is another water that fishes extremely well at this time of year. This situation is verified daily by bailiff Jeff Spencer. Skimmers and roach dominate daytime catches, whilst carp and bigger bream take over during the hours of darkness, a situation much enjoyed by our night permit holders.

The last work party facilitating the accrual of 2002 overstamp hours takes place next Sunday (7/4/02). These hours may well allow you to complete the 12 hours required to gain instant access to the waters selected for work party attendees, or the six hours of work party time to allow you onto the same waters from the 25th of May.

Please do not forget to renew your Environment Agency rod licence, or your Lymm Angling Club membership, prior to your next trip out.
