The Morgan Cod had been caught over the weekend and kept on ice until it could be filleted ready for sale to the public. However, far from ending up in little freezer bags, this particular 5′ 9″ 97lb cod ended up being removed from the filleting factory in a body bag as Australian police took it away for further investigation.

The head is thought to belong to local fisherman Michael Peter Edwards who disappeared after falling off his trawler on Sunday. The search for Mr Edwards was called off after the discovery of the head.

Authorities are still puzzled as to how the head got inside the cod’s stomach as the Morgan cod feeds by sucking in its prey and doesn’t have sharp teeth.
