Round 1 Porth Reservoir 13/01/02

The 2002 winter league got off to a start at this ever-popularvenue with 13 teams of 3 competing. Although conditions on the daywere quite mild with a favourable and mercifully light southwesterly, previous weeks of frosty nights had left the water cold and clear. This was going to be tough; well it is the Winter League afterall.

With A-section in the meadow and B&C on the far side, I forone was relieved to see the warden with the boat to take the gearover. The draw took place and everyone departed to their pegs andthen it rained! A lot!

The fishing was hard as expected but most anglers managed to putsomething in the net. Very few skimmers showed with roach making upthe bulk of most catches. The reservoir now seems to be alive withpike and the top two individual weights contained pike. Many anglersreported being troubled by them.

A-section was won by Pete Walker (St Columb Magic) with 6lb 3oz ofroach taken on feeder and pole with maggot from A12 (Pixiespoint).

B-section went to Phoenix rod, Jeff Chapfield with 9lb 12ozincluding a large pike from permanent peg 72.

C-section was taken by Terry Price (St Columb Wonders) with 11lbincluding a 10lb+ pike from permanent peg 93.

Team-wise Bait Bunker ran out winners on the day with 30 sectionpoints. Joint second on 29 points were St Columb Magic and TeamNewtown. With only 5 points separating the top seven teams, its stillall to play for as we head off to Whiteacres in two weeks time.
