Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

16th February 2001

Danny Hale and Des Boyd had a Sunday morning session on the BridgewaterCanal at Broadheath Basin and shared a 20lbs mixed bag of bream, skimmers, roach, and gudgeon. They both used a small canal quiver-tip, presenting maggot on the far shelf. They decided to try a spell of pike fishing and had four dropped runs in an hour and a half. The Canal is generally fishing well for the time of the year with plenty of small roach, gudgeon, and skimmers to either bread or pinkie. Better stamp roach to caster.

Anglers are starting to drift back to Grey Mist Mere, although the fishingis not at its best, with only odd carp being caught. I am waiting to seehow this water fishes after being open for the first time in April and May.

Sport at Ackers Pit seems to have improved, despite the clear water; AdrianHolding fished the waggler at four rod lengths, alternating between maggotand paste on the hook. He reckons he ended up with thirty roach to 8ozs andthree bream of about 1.5lbs that took a fancy to flavoured bread paste.Other anglers seeing the action, changed from the pole to the waggler andhad a roach every cast. This fishery closes at the end of February so makethe most of what’s currently on offer.

Hardly anyone has been using Rixton Claypits so Jim Hulme’s report ofquality perch taken on injected lobworm was more than welcome. Fishing asmall leger he lost his first two fish in a snag but landed three of 1-8-0,2-0-0, and 2-12-0. For the record a fish of 5lbs was reported last yearthat took a dead-bait intended for pike.

The River Mersey is producing a few fish to the hardy band of enthusiastswho still marvel at the fact that this river in actually a fishery. Thestocked chub are growing with fish reported to 12ozs plus a few roach andgudgeon. A number of members have expressed concern regarding deposits of spoil adjacent to pegs between Kingsway Bridge and Paddington Bank. This is due to pathway re-surfacing and will be resolved on completion of theproject.
