Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column – www.warrington-anglers.org.uk

26th January 2001

This past week most fishing trips and matches on our canals and stillwaterswere cancelled due to freezing conditions and only the hardy few chose tobreak the ice. On the Bridgewater Canal those that made the effort enjoyedsome brisk sport with lots of small roach and a few skimmers.

Graham Belton drew the end peg yet again and secured his second win in four days, winning both the Wednesday and Saturday matches. On Saturday he fished bread punch to put 2-14-8 on the scales.

Levels on the River Mersey were dropped slightly for jetty repairs at therowing club last week and only produced a few fish. Followed by snow/icemelt water it presents a bleak picture for the chance of any reasonablesport over the weekend.

Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham had a session on the River Derwent atour Darley Abbey stretch last week. They had an all-grayling catch of aboutforty fish between them, with some decent specimens to 1.5lbs plus. Bothused either leger or stick-float with caster at the business end. ThisAssociation owned fishery which is only an hours drive from Warringtonalways produces reasonable sport and contains quality bream, roach, perch, pike, chub, trout, and carp escapees from adjacent pools.

Within ten to fifteen minutes drive of the Derwent fishery you have thechoice of the Trent or the Dove. This stretch of the Trent must be one ofthe few that has offered consistent sport, especially pike, althoughcurrently a four wheel drive vehicle is needed to drive along the floodedlane to our car park. The Dove is easy parking, offering sport with barbel, chub, grayling, and trout. My tip is travel light; it is only one fielddistance from your car…. but it’s a big field. Worth the effort.

Never listen to rumour, as they are usually utterly wrong. Several examplescirculating at present are that we are netting out fish from the canal andthat yours truly has resigned as your secretary. Well the first is totalrubbish and just the reverse is the truth. The second possibly has anelement of truth, but is way off the mark. For the record, yes I haveresigned, but only from several committees that I formally sat on, both notconnected with our Association in any way. But, I have now joined the DeeFisheries Recovery Group, which is actively looking at ways to help theriver recover from its recent devastating pollution. My first meeting istoday, hardly the actions of a man that intended quitting!
