For dorsetand chub:

Worthwhile species?

For me, aside from the "technical" species (like good-sized roach or really picky trout and grayling), worthwhile has meant "jet fighters", not "arm-ache submarines". They have to be fished for in what, to my mind, is a sporting, non-sanity threatening and, preferably, highly active, not braindead passive, manner - e.g. any carp fisher can camp for a week and wait till something makes a mistake one 4.00am; the real top carpers, the Rods and the Richies and people like "Blackwater" and Horton Kevin mentioned in another thread, looked, looked long, thought, thought some more, then fished and often seemingly "instantly" caught: the mark of a great Angler.

That's my few bob's worth, purely personal, each to his own.

I have a name thanks Paul. I just don't feel the need to shout it from the roof tops at every opportunity. This Easom fella's ego is nothing on yours!!

So much aggro, such little fishing, just dissing the latest fishy emperor in his new (non-existent) clothes. Take a look at my posts; they're about fishing in ways that I have seen great anglers do, both coarse and game, over a good few years, and have tried to emulate in my own fishing; my God, it has paid dividends, and I never had to argue with anyone, at least on the many bits of bank I have walked along the way. Shame that the Internet, once such a positive medium for exchanging ideas and getting together, became a never-ending brawl.

Mr Boote,

As you rightly say, each to their own but what I find worrying with some opinions is the "nuisance species" train of thought which seems to infect single species anglers like a form of plague.

I'm just not sure that phrases like "worthwhile species" are so helpful, tomorrow's anglers will very probably start off with sticklebacks, gudgeon et al not with 20lb carp. I just personally believe that anyone who can adopt and use phrases like that is a short step away from apathy concerning the fate of any species they don't consider their targets. Truth be told, I find the sometime arrogance of those people gut wrenching.

Not only is it sad but is there truly a place within angling for anybody who doesn't care about fish - ALL fish??

Not a criticism and, as I said, I don't know you, but phrases like those worry me. To my mind, the tiniest stickleback is as worthy as the greatest carp or pike.

The poorest he hath but a life to lead, as Thomas Rinsborough put it.

Have a wonderful weekend :)

You might be getting me wrong, dorset - "worthwhile" to me means "fun" - reason why I only fished for "whatever comes along", mostly tiddler dace, roach and chub, with a 13-foot trotting rod and 'pin, last season. No glory in such species fished for in such a non-specialist, scattergun style, but I had some of my most enjoyable fishing in years, looking like a "noddy" and very often fishing and acting like one! Remember fun, a few of you...?

Fine, my apologies. :)

I cannot understand the attitude of some species-obsessed people who will regard a near 2lb roach (or anything else) as a nuisance species.

I was lucky enough to catch a very large roach a few years back and, even now, those memories are still clear as a bell - and I hope they stay that way for ever!!

The roach / bream/ whatever it be that takes the twin 18mm boilies has no way of knowing it's not the intended quarry, does it?

I love all fish - whatever they be. Catching them is a priviledge not a right and, having read your post, I feel sure you feel the same way?

Have a wonderful weekend :)

The aforementioned Easom has trawled most of the forums over past couple of years peddling his own brand of self-satisfied smugness. He even tried to befriend me once; however, life's too short.

Still, good luck to him and those of the same ilk, whose raison d'etre is fame and fortune (in that order). :)

Need fun to keep the fire burning.... Scatter gunning at the moment. Mind you, quite like to get absorbed in the single species game... I quite like the madness of fishing in general....

Not so sure about Mr Clare... but first and foremost 'I am' an angler. The forum part at times is indicative of the lunacy associated with the affliction.

I long for scenes where man hath never trod
A place where woman never smiled or wept
There to abide with my Creator, God,
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept,
Untroubling and untroubled where I lie
The grass below—above the vaulted sky.

As for what Mr Easom is upto.. I worry not a jot!

Why your is posts should upset the few really puzzles me Paul, it's as if they are looking to become Mr Annoyed even before you make an observation.

Time to move on boys, it's only fishing!!.

I quite like Paul Bootes posts.... I usually have to read them through a few times - but I try and get the gist (needs to differentiate..). Seems to enjoy playing up to his tormentors. Best of all cares little of what anyone thinks....

Good style IMO. Me? I'm a sensitive little sausage....

I had both carp and barbel feeding together on both pellets and boilies only the other day. You ought to have seen the tiny, crawl-through, close when exiting, tunnel I cut through some bushes with secateurs and a folding pruning saw to get to them!

Thats the magic you can't buy in a packet......

There appears to be a certain disquiet about this Easom chap in various quarters. Whilst I know squat about 3 Foot Twitch baits, or most other bait companies wares either come to that, I have had some experience of correspondence with Mr Easom. I found him to be polite with an inquiring mind eager to listen and learn. I couldn't care tuppence if he wants to make a few bob from angling because if he is successful he will join a very long line of household angling names who "done good" selling a lot of quality products over the years.

And without wishing to rain on any bait dealers parade, anyone who knows anything about barbel also knows you can catch em on anything once the river has fresh water running through it. The higher the better.

Didn't John Baker provide the inspiration or expertise for the bait chapter in Carp Fever? Apologies to Kev Maddocks if I've got that parrot fashion.

RE: asking questions about what barbel rod rests....well to be fair I've asked this question myself.

Some people instantly know everything about Barbel fishing while others have to ask questions to acquire the same level of knowledge over time and willing to share that knowledge, I fit into the latter category so can't knock the guy, I find asking questions helps me learn more about the things I take pleasure from, which is fishing in general.

This chap has a great blog imho, has quite a few time served hours on the bank and presents what has worked to those new to Barbel fishing or are seeking help or at very least some inspiration (that doesn't involve bad mouthing a fellow fisherman), I don't remember people cursing say John Wilson who went into television also, maybe he never had to ask a question regarding fishing, but I doubt it.

Well Wes, looks like he's got you fooled.

You are commenting on something which was posted 18 months ago but the whole point was that in the space of the preceding season this guy had gone from being someone who had so little knowledge of his chosen quarry or its habitat he needed advice on something as simple as a rod rest to someone who a few months later was running his own blog and bait company and telling other novices how great an angler he is.
Any experience he has managed to gain has been gained on one short stretch of the most prolific part of the most prolific barbel water in the country, far from needing a special bait you could catch barbel there on jelly babies.

To compare this 'green as grass', 'Johnny come lately' to someone like John Wilson who has a lifetimes experience of every aspect of angling is like comparing a pampered pedigree house cat to a wild dominant male lion.

“The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.”

Fooled? I stumbled upon his blog while searching for answers about certain watercraft and thats where I happened to find, I'm not interested in bait pimps personally but I don't care if they are making money or enjoying success either, if he has learn't faster than most good for him I say, he is after all in his 30's with a passion for Barbel fishing and helping others find that same passion.

I was making the point that John wilson at some point will of had to of started somewhere and would of needed to ask some questions along the way to those who he himself regarded as knowledgeable, thats what in part builds a great angler, not a "know it all".
I also stand by what I've said, I have learn't something from his blog and have thanked him for it, I see little point criticising him for choosing one of the best possible places to learn about & fish for Barbel ......I wouldn't expect him to target the harder waters first (would you?) especially if he is unsure about simple things like rod rests.
What have we both learn't in 18 months ;) & How many Barbel have you personally caught using Jelly Babies on the Trent and can I read about it on your blog?

kind regards

Wes, do yourself a favour and buy a couple of books. I would suggest Barbel, A lifetimes addiction by Trefor West, Understanding Barbel by Fred Crouch and A Quest for Barbel by West and Miles as a good starting point, when you have read them go on to the barbel catchers books and then The Fighting Barbel by Peter Wheat then tell me how much you really learned from the charlatans blog.

As for your last two questions I have nothing to sell and no trumpet to blow so I don't need a blog and I fished at Hazelford for several seasons where I discovered barbel prefer the yellow jelly babies, probably because they stand out better.

A title also used by Mr Easom, I know who I would be taking notice of and it wouldn't be the one that didn't write the book.

Truth is if you find Barbel and present a bait to them without spooking them they will eat mostly anything including rubbish baits.
