Has anyone got one of the above? I'm looking for a new float rod, but am not really after a pellet waggler and 12ft is really an absolute max because of overhanging trees at one of my main venues. My worry is the 30g max casting weight. Pretty heavy for a standard float rod and I want this for targeting silvers and small tench, so sitting nicely under my power float.
If not this, then any other ideas? budget of a MAX £130.

Fishing lots of Dorset waters over the years I'm intrigued as to where is such a 'parrot cage' that a 13' rod is too long? I have yet to fail to fish somewhere local using a 13' rod.

Free Spirit do a range of float rods marketed under the Tamer brand. I have the 12ft version it's a lovely versatile rod and in IMO the finish is similar to similar rods in the orice range. I think I paid £109 for mine from Johnson Ross three years ago.

Luckfield on your DDAS membership. It's just not worth the hassle of stuff above your head.

Thanks @chevin4 I'll look it up

It's described as a power float but the rod won't feel overgunned with 8oz roach or chub. I use mine for small stream trotting and find it ideal.

There is a cadence 11ft no3 float rod on eBay starting at £60. Might be worth a bid.
Just had a look and unfortunately it's collection only and I don't know anyone even remotely close to Hatfield! But the Cadence range does look interesting, so it's not a wasted suggestion

Although I haven’t used any of them; The TackleBox Darent Valley rods have been getting fairly good reports recently.

The rod below is the Darent Valley 12ft 2 piece Specialist Float rod (£54.99p):
NB: It also comes in a 13ft version for £64.99p.

You must have fantastic waters Mark, because I can't think of any venue I fish where every peg that I'd like to floatfish is fishable with a 13ft rod, some I fish are tight with an 11fter, rivers and lakes, ok you can find somewhere you 'can' fish, but some cracking swims are awkward with overhanging branches...

I grew up fishing a heavily treed water that was very tight for space so learnt roll casts etc.. as it is very deep. Over the years the trees have been cut back so rarely have a problem nowadays. One favourite swim on the upper Stour is awkward nowadays and needs attention with a lopper. I have fished the water Chris mentions with 13 and 14ft rods but only some of the swims. Only time I caught in the trees there was when a fish spat out the hook as I went to net it. I walked a field on the upper Stour recently and out of a dozen swims that were fishable 30 years ago only 4 remain due to tree growth.

No doubt there will be some rods available within the price restriction, but personal preference could make it bloody hard...

Mark, if you can't mend your line, or lift it to keep control because of branches it matters not how you cast, as you well know after trotting the years you have keeping the line behind your float and not allowing the line to be caught by swirling water is paramount, swims that are unfishable aren't swims that are unfishable with a longer rod, also some swims you might be able to fish with a 13ft rod are a darn sight easier to fish with an 11ft....

On the Bristol Avon 30 years ago I used to carry a pruning saw; I initially had a junior hacksaw with a coarse blade until a local produced a pruning saw. Not sure about climbing trees so much nowadays. On the BA it was the alder trees that were the problem. I suspect some of the stretches I fished in the early 90s are barely fishable nowadays.

Agreed Mark, but like you I'm not doing any of that at approaching 70, I have some bits and bobs that I would take in the car if I thought there were some manageable problems, I must say that we must take into consideration not knowing anglers asking questions abilities or inability, having drawn many a bird cage in open and league matches that made simple methods a nightmare I wonder how any inexperienced anglers would fish without losing thirty floats and hooks, let's be honest with our experience we do things automatically that others can't imagine, I mentioned to a mate this very morning how I watched two different videos made by very highly rated match anglers on feeder fishing, stating that they always cast on their right hand sides, I was gobsmacked, so what happens when it blows a gale from your right hand side, pushing your feeder, hooklength etc into your rod, the only option is to cast from your left, I can cast equally well from either side, I taught myself to cast underarm on the float from either side, or from directly under the rod, I'm not asking for a round of applause, it's just something I did/do, like the roll casting you mention Mark, there are countless thousands of bloody good float anglers out there, but there are lots more who haven't got a clue as to why they shot this way, or that way, or cast in different ways, it's a knowledge you either search for, or don't...

Just remembered that on one water I fished a fair bit a decade ago it was very restricted and I have a 1980s Silstar swingtip rod (carbon) which wasn't that good for swingtippingg but is very light, tippy and slim and proved ideal for that water.
