Like anything in angling its horses for courses, if distance is needed to catch on a regular basis then that's what I would do, getting freebies out there is not a problem, using a sling groundbait containing anything you want can be put a long way. On a pressured water though a single bait in an area where you know fish frequent can often produce a fish.
