Good luck barbelling Percy.
Focus on location no matter what river you fish. It's a cliche but you can't catch fish that aren't there.
Use reliable, solid and balanced tackle. Most people will recommend mainline of at least 10lb, I use 12lb in conjunction with a progressive actioned 11ft 1.75tc rod.
Set your clutch to give line once the rod is in a nice battle curve. Don't be too heavy handed when trying to stop the first run that the barbel goes on when first hooked. The clutch and the rod should do the work.
Rest any barbel you catch in the net before taking from the water to unhook etc. this helps their recovery a lot. Make sure that its strong enough before releasing as well. I find resting the fish and holding it in the water one of the unique experiences of barbel fishing that makes it so great.
Expect to meet the odd secret squirrel on the bank but also the odd helpful soul who will chew your ear off!
