An old boy once told me that Red Herrings were good, but I think he was trying to throw me off what he was really using...

I've tried mackerel, sardine, herring, perch, roach. Caugh nowt on all, best have been by far SPRAT. Have had more on sprat deadbait suspended under a bung or wobbled than any other method and bait put together.

So for me, sprat, sprat and sprat. (Does this make a shoal?)

Sprats , two or three per treble , float fished a foot off bottom , great bait and soft enough to strike , have had a load of pike this way .
Macky tail , good bait , herrings ,a bit hit or miss depending on the water .:D

Sardines Herrings and smelt for me.

I'd put mackerel up there with the best of baits in terms of its attraction to pike, however I find it an impractically tough bait to use in many situations. I've lost count of the pike I've dropped off on the way to the net on Mackerel baits.

... even so I rarely travel to the water without a couple of mackerel. Along with those mentioned above and lamprey it makes up my 'big five' dead-bait choices. I generally have all five options with me.

My first choice for still waters at range is a half mac, not to thick though.
Smelt is a fantastic fish anywere bait, bigger the better.
Skimmer bream - lightly hooked will take repeated casts & my favourite bait for paternostering on rivers.

Have a couple of other faves, sardines & roach but thats more than three is'nt it.

my first choice will be Roach or any other freshwater fish then Sprats and Mackerel. I fish my mackerel in chunks on a one hook rig and it works fine.
