John's son Steven has just phoned me to let me know the sad news that John passed away this morning at about 5am.

He went peacefully and Steven commented that at least now he was at peace.

RIP John, we'll miss you. Condolences to all his family and friends.

That is very sad news.

John and I crossed swords on several occasions on non-fishing matters but when it came to fishing little divided us.He was always ready in private e-mails to acknowledge when he felt he had crossed the line and that was to his great credit.

He was a real character as well as obvioulsy a river angler of high skill.

It would be nice if his friends could put together something as to his life by way of an obituary.

Condolences to his family and all his friends.

Derbyshire: best beer, best cheese, best puddings.
I can only say the same as everyone else. I never met John and we had the odd disagreement on here but he still took the time to e-mail me advice about the Derbyshire Derwent.

He was certainly one of a kind.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I have just spoken with Ann Ledger - John's widow.

She will let me know the funeral details when they become available.

In the meantime I will send a card from all his mates on FM.

Oh f..k. I didn't realise it was so close/bad.

....and I was going to pm him last night asking why we hadn't seen a typical scathing rebuke for a while.

I echo Kevin P, he was one of the characters that helps make FM what it is.

My deepest condolences to Ann and the family, he will be missed by many on here.
