I seem to remember Mr Crabtree the weight was at your end of the boat!
But your right, I seldom cast more than a few yards so perhaps 5 years of old backing line will be ok.

Not a problem Mr Spider, just always looking for the easy life, why do you think I had Peter rowing ;)

my mate uses nail varnish remover ---just paints it round the line and watches it disolve----then washes his spool---i never tried it but mite do

Too look after bird life and wild animals alike make sure you burn the line as otherwise it can kill and maim the above if it gets into landfill.
Its the same as beer can holders which trap animals.
