I've just had parcelforce pick up the rods I was selling, finnished up costing me £38 including vat and insured up to 250 notes (cost an extra fiver to knock the insurance up from 100 to 250)...I reckon that's expensive but I couldn't find another courier in time to do it. There's gott'a be some better ones to use!

Crikey Ian, did you go for dearest first?! The only time it's cost me more than twenty notes was to send rods to France and Germany.

Rob, when you read the small print most of them won't insure fishing rods. Who would you have used that would insure them ?
It's just not worth the risk of sending then uninsured.

I sent the last one via our local post office, but it was a bit shorter (4-piece 18ft.) Before that was probably a couple of years ago, so I'm not sure who the courier was but I'm pretty sure it was insured - I came across the same trouble as you did but there were a couple of firms who did offer insurance, unless their policy's changed since then. I don't like sending anything uninsured when you see how the drivers chuck parcels about.

BTW, did you ever get fixed up with some rod sleeves? I've just bought some NGT ones - 6 for £48 - and they're fine, but only the reel area's padded. They easily swallow a 2-piece 12ft rod with 10,000 size reel on and (most importantly) the bottom part fits into the tiny pockets on both of my Korum quivers. There's a bit of wiggle room as well - maybe 3-4" - so you'd get a 12ft 6 rod in OK.

In Ireland/N Ireland its even more of a nightmare. That narrow stretch of water is a moneypit!

Parcelforce large parcels are the only ones I've ever found here that will take over 150cms which the longer 2 piece rods are. Newly established local UPS drop off point had a CARPET picked up - yes a CARPET. I thought 'great' finally. Contacted them a few weeks ago and they wont transport fishing rods...full stop.

Myhermes, Yodel, Dhl, Parcel Monkey, Interparcel etc...tried them all and none could help.

Obviously there's some reason for the whole length thing. I just don't understand why in this modern society we live in, posting a skinny tube weighing nowt is such a challenge.

Kid you not...phoned Royal Mail direct a long time ago to see what the options were for getting a reasonable price for sending a rod I had sold. Fella started blathering on about how they had a van service for this sort of thing or something along those lines...wait for it...£680...yes that's correct £680! I explained we were talking about a £80 fishing rod...he really didn't get it. Just proceeded to query further if I would like to book.

However, I will say this...Parcelforce are the only courier who have never lost, damaged, misdelivered or failed to collect items for me.

There's no problem sending a three peice 12 or 13ft rod via royal mail...imo they're by far the best, even though they have snapped several rods clean in two! Thing was I was insured and so still got most of my money back "eventually".

I did get some rod sleeves Rob, plumped for the drennan super specialist ones that matched the super specialist quiver they attatch to. By no means perfect but the set up was the best I could find. I've only used it once up to now and it worked ok. A couple of problems I found with the sleeves was that even small'ish 5010 baitrunners are a very tight squeeze when zipping up the sleeves you've gott'a be carefull that you don't trap your line in the effin' zip :eek:mg:.

i have sent a rod i sold on ebay by collect plus £8.00 3-4 day delivery

Yeah chrissh, but it can't have been over 60cm long so collect plus is useless if you have longer rods to send, as I had.
