The baiting target thing is pretty standard stuff but it's good to repeat these things, there's always a few people who have not seen or heard of them before.
I use a similar baiting pattern on rivers to establish a feeding area. On arriving at a lower Severn swim I catapult a few samples of feed as far as I can on a 45 degree angle across the river keeping them low so they spread, I then fire twice as many a little closer then twice as many again in the area I wish to catch from the idea being to cover as much of the river as I can while focusing the bait back to one killer spot. It is important to keep up the feed rate. Think of it as a torch beam which gets weaker and wider the further away from the source.
I'm not claiming credit for this, but again it's something which I was shown at least thirty years ago and is probably worth repeating.
