For pole fishing I find it best to set it up for what you want to catch with your chosen bait, and then deal with anything else that comes along. Steve ringer used to use doubled up elastic this meant he could land smaller fish without bumping them off but he also had enough power in reserve. You would still have to tailor you rig line for your target species. So that would probably determine what size elastic to use. Aim for roach risk losing carp and vice versa IMO
