The hardest sharpest knives and swords were, and still are, made in Japan by craftsmen in a very labourious and skillful method.

The skills there are very similar to those learned in Sheffield years ago. Case hardening was the name of the game here.
I have owned a few Japanese knives in my time and can confirm that they are truly excellent. As regards a catana, I want one!
