There will be plenty of butties Jerry.

Apart from for the last arriving. And how many Rog, Jimmy and Neil eat whilst they prepare them.

( they don't know that yet!)

Just spent an enjoyable afternoon sorting out the gear for the weekend, replacing line where necessary, making up new rigs, delving into the bait store and finally rationalising it to something I might just have a chance to carry. Only problem there's no room for me in the car now.

Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday and have a safe drive.

Update on the fish in.

Its the toughest I've known in 5 years on this stretch.
About a quarter barbel each!!!!!

Hot. Low river. High Pressure. (Add any other excuse you want)

Good Social. Curry and Chilli for dinner and a few beers MAY take the pain away.
Pluses. Its not snowing sleeting gusting a la FM Fish in normality
As of 1900hrs.

About a quarter barbel each!!!!!

So who caught barbel then? I managed three chub to pushing a pound, four perch to about three quarters, a tiny dace (could have been a bleak) and my best...............a bl**dy eel about 2'0 long and 2" thick, almost took as long to net it as it did to unhook it. Apart from the eel and one chub, everything else was on trotted maggot Managed to lose one fish on the float that broke my hooklength, unsurprisingly just after I'd dropped from a12 to 5lb to an 18 to 2.5! How unusual:rolleyes: Didn't feel like a chub or barbel so I'm thinking Salmonid, didn't feel massive but went like a train and bent the rod double.

Big, big, thank you to Graham Elliot for organising this and his kind contribution to my float collection, I'm sure they'll last at least a fortnight:), ditto to his good lady for the wonderful breakfast sarnies.

Cheers for driving Steve.

The river was not fishing well, for those who stayed later I hope it improved.

Finally, I thing Jerry is planning a night on the town later, he was practising his break dancing on the bank this afternoon. Ross on Wye you have been warned:eek::D:D

Great to meet you guys! I arrived very late I know but I've never had such a good welcome. Our esteemed editor Cliff, who was just leaving, almost ran to me with delight.

"Colin, great to see you old boy etc etc etc - you wouldn't be so kind as to give me a lift in your 4x4 back up the hill to my car with all my gear?" lol. Mind you it was heavy and the hill formidable!

I decided one rod, light chair and a rucksack was the way to go so I unpacked what I needed from my Maver EVA super seal (large) bag and repacked the minimum into my Trakker 50 litre rucksack.

What rod? Well the target was barbel so a barbel rod and I only own one so the Berkley M1 barbel rod was dug out of hibernation and I took the Shimano 2500 baby bait runner off my 10ft Maver Powerlite pellet waggler and put onto the Berkley M1. The Berkley M1 comes with a 1lb, 1.25lb, and a quiver top with a 2ox and a 4oz tip, this caused my first mistake. I have never seen the need for a tip so I fitted the 1.25lb top, big mistake, sat all day watching the end of the rod up in the air a coloured tip would have been much better.

I set the rod up with Daiwa sensor 8lb mainline with a Guru 20z inline feeder and a 6 inch n-gage 9lb hook link with a drennan specialist 12 hook and a hair to a drennan micro band. This was stored in my Drennan single rod ready sleeve.

Blimey this product placement is hard work but it will be worth it when the sponsorship deals flood in.

I chose a swim that had a concrete and stone thingy protruding out a good way across the river because my casting needs all the help it can get. I set up and cast a short distance into some turbulent water and waited for the first of the many barbel that Graham had promised. Shortly after Graham came up behind me (oo err missus, no don't titter) and said "oi moron, cast right across to the trees up stream, and let out several rod lengths of slack line, watch for the tip to pull down and spring back, that'll be a fish". I did what he said because me mum always said respect your elders.

I had 11 chub between 2 and 4lb, lost 3, 2 barbel one of 5lb and one of 6lb and several chublets around the 4oz mark.

A lovely day out with a big thanks to Graham for organising it and spending the day offering advise. Grahams wife also deserves a big thanks for the coffee and bacon rolls.

I would like to say it was nice to meet other FM'ers but it wasn't. Also I am not really as bald as the picture of the back of me head in cb's pictures shows, I cut me hair like that the night before so I would fit in with all the other old gits.

---------- Post added at 07:25 ---------- Previous post was at 07:20 ----------

My mate (sorry Skip I mean acquaintance), Spadger, had a good day fishing a feeder and maggot, with 4 eels to 3lb, 7 perch to 1lb 6oz, 18 chublets and a small barbel.

Believe it or not I arrived at Graham’s house shortly before 07.30hrs. Some of the others were already there on the patio supping orange juice so hellos were exchanged while coffee and ‘brekkie arrived. It was good to meet up with Cliff and Saggy, also all the familiar faces again. I’m not sure what happened to Clarky and Skip but their white transit eventually arrived some time after I’d ferried my gear to the river and returned for a water bottle I’d left behind. I’ve heard of goods being lost in transit but never a couple of anglers.................

I ended up in a very steep swim that I ‘abseiled’ down to while Ian (Itsfishing) to my right had a well manicured set steps leading down a comfortable flat surface. This is the first time I can remember that he didn’t need to borrow floats – just a rod this time as a ring became broken. Still, he occupied himself setting up a feeder to catch eels.:)

As has been said, the fishing conditions weren’t ideal (I ended up with five chub when I rugged up at 18.00hrs) but I really enjoyed the day meeting up with a lot of familiar faces again. At 21.00hrs some of us returned to Graham’s for a very welcome dinner on the patio, washed down with some alcoholic refreshment and generally talking fishing bollox into the night.

Many thanks to Graham and his wife for all the effort in providing a most enjoyable day and evening.

Graham a big big thank you to you and your good lady for the hospitality at the start.
Managed 3 small roach on sweetcorn saving me from blanking on a nice river as tough as it was.
lovely day spoilt for me by the damage done to my car by the sheep in the field.

Again Graham many thanks :)

Firstly, once again a massive thank you to Graham for organising the fishing and to the lovely Jane for the outstanding post grueller nosebag. You could not wish for better hosts.

Now...if you think all you're getting from me is a few lines dream on. I will do a proper write up when I've time as there are so many tales of the riverbank to relate......including

Clarky the Eel Whisperer
Armchair Andy who was half way across the river already perched out on that croy
Ray and Jimmy dragging my trolley back up the north face of the Eiger ( thanks lads)
And why you should always take enough bait for a month

I fished one of Graham's banker barbel swims. It was a long chuck and a difficult swim to fish but I think I fished it pretty well. Sadly the barbel either disagreed or weren't in residence yesterday. Such is life.....I enjoyed the day enormously and it's always great to exchange insults with Ray & Neil and to be able to put names to faces as well as see " the usual suspects" again.

Thanks to Ray for driving and for bringing the cast of his record roach for us all to gasp at. Personally, I think there's a hint of bream about it !

I will certainly fish there again but not without a Chinook to get me and my gear back up that sodding hill ! Sorting the gear out now before I pressure wash the sheep **** off my trolley !

Skippy

PS I didn't blank. I had 2 proper bites and 2 Chub, the best about 3.5lb, a 3 oz chublet that somehow swallowed a pellet bigger than its head, the most beautifully marked perch I think I've ever caught....again on a pellet, a couple of bleak and Clarkies tame eel on his rod from his swim, which, I might add, was nearer Monmouth than Ross. I also ate his lunch. Very nice too !

S-Kip, if you fished the top meadow by the old bridge and had got there earlier :) you would have been aware that there's another car park at the top of the fishery, it doesn't open that early (wouldn't have been a problem for you and Ray) and would have avoided the hike. Did you have the last two sarnies? I was seriously tempted to have another but decided to play fair:wh

The single handled Shimmie was a little light for the 15'0 rod, knew I should have used the Stradic:)
