I want to buy a 2 piece heavy rod, as i dont want to be under gunned with my old mach3 12ft feeder, i want to use it for the odd barbel session on the swale and as a 2nd chub rod and maybe casting 1oz method feeders for carp, i think i've narrowed it down to a few.

Drennan 12ft super feeder,Drennan 7 series method feeder.
Sonic 1.5lb specialist rod with quivers tips.

Do any of you lads, have any of these rods? are they any good? will they cast 3-4 ounces? cheers.

I've got the Series 7 Puddlechucker method feeder which I bought as a chub rod. Commercial method feeders are just a bit softer in action than normal method feeders so they suit river fishing really well. It's probably much the same power as the Series 7 method and I'd rate it as fine for lines of around 8lb.

will they cast 3-4 ounces?

Do you really mean cast or are you really talking about gently lobbing 3-4oz?
All the rods listed should cope with occasionally lobbing 3-4oz around. If it was going to be a regular occurrence, with the odd attempt at genuinely casting that sort of weight, I'd be looking at a barbel rod, probably around the 1.75lb mark.

Cheers for the replies.
Its a bit of a minefield buying rods at times, its nice to buy a rod that just feels right, i dont want a scaffold pole just something suitable to fish my local rivers Wear, Tees and perhaps a few trips to day ticket stretches of the swale and maybe even land a Barbel if i'm lucky.

I now suspect that an Avon rod might it the bill better than an out and out barbel rod or a method feeder rod.

As you've listed a few Drennan rods already, try
this.

Yes, that looks ideal, and if it's anything like my drennan matchpro float rod, it should be a pleasure to use. cheers.

Before I had most of my gear nicked recently, I had a Drennan 1.25 Avon. What a great rod. Taken quite a few reasonable barbel to about 8lbs on it, plus its ideal for chub or even roach. If you want something just a little beefier, go for the 1.5 instead.

I agree with Sam, but.....

The Series 7 Puddlechucker method feeder (nice rod same about the name) has the same power in the butt as the Series 7 avon, but has a slightly softer tip section which makes it a better quiver tip rod (takes the same tips as the avon).

If you feel that you'll have a use for the an avon top then buy the Series 7 Avon, but if you're going to be mainly fishing with the quiver tip for chub and small/medium barbel then I'd recommend the Puddlechucker.

So does the carrier top section of an avon rod, have a lower test curve than the avon top? Something i've often wondered.

Have you thought about a Daiwa Connoisseur Z ledger Mk11 11/13ft Extra Power Combo Feeder. Versatility for standard feeder fishing or heavier fishing for barbel no problem. Length adjustable to suit the peg or distance to be cast. Had a few barbel to 8.5lbs on the Wye last summer with mine. Handled them really well. Usually got one on eBay every couple of weeks at a reasonable price.

I've got a pair of Greys using on the Severn , I mainly use 2.5 or 3oz feeders but I have used 5oz with these rods . Nice action good looking rods that I've used to take fish up to 11-4 .
Very happy & confident with these rods & I shall be getting a new pb with them this season :)

I recommend A Fox Duo-Lite™ FX Multi Tip Barbel 1.75/Quiver as its perfect for casting 1-6 oz feeders or leads and brilliant for playing barbel, Chub, Tench, Carp & Bream I have 2 of these and wouldn't be without then in a river session ;)

Heavy is a debatable term, what is heavy to some isn't to others.
If you are looking for an off the shelf rod then probably those recommended will be fine.
To me what is more important is the action, if you are expecting barbel you need good through action, too stiff and they will bump off. Depends on your budget but i would look for something around 12 ft 2 piece 1.75 or 2 lb built on a chimera blank. You can fish "heavy" i.e 12lb and it will be fine but you wouldn't break a 4 lb bottom with such.
