i've only see perch get caught on sea deads this time of year, but i have seen it happen a few times when they have been fry chasing, and the results were all 2 lb plus. and every time i've seen it happen the person fishing for them has been piking at the time so it's not even as if the perch can have been picking them up tentatively.

Sea deads are simply deadbaits from the sea. Sprats, mackerel etc.

sbeehre, are your smelts the same as ours - small, predatory esturial fish..?

I ask out of interest as they're a deadly bait on a couple of waters I fish but hard to come by in a decent size these days.

Ours have a very distinctive cucumber-like smell to them, much more pronounced if you can get them fresh as opposed to frozen.

A lot of us rely on deadbaits in the winter for much of our fishing, sea baits are favoured over here because they have a much stronger scent.
